I recently read a thread saying that the proper way to measure a fish it by pinching it's tail together. I am a rookie to this whole fishing thing and would like to hear the thoughts of more experienced anglers. Does pinching the tail add length and if so how much on average? Thanks for the help guys.

Posts: 2361 | Probably, but not as much as cutting the first three inches off your measuring stick... (might be as much as .75 to 1.0 on a real large fish).

No need to tail pinch, just measure jaw to end of tail and that is quick and easy on the fish

Thanks for your thoughts guys! I guess I need to catch one before worrying about a measurement, huh?

Posts: 364 Location: Kentucky | You can use a bump board like this. It's quick and easy and not tough on the fish. Just pull it out of the net, onto the board for 10 seconds, a quick pic, and back in the water. http://dunwrighttackle.com/accessories.shtml Or you can measure like some famous guys on TV, either eyeball it or flop a sewing tape in the water. Get a lot more big ones that way.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I will definitely be getting one of those boards.

I personally think a light "pinch" of the tail gives a more accurate measurement...I am so sick of the "NTP" (no tail pinch) stuff when guys say they got a big fish...like it somehow was 2" bigger if they had pinched the tail? gimme a break..go catch a big one and try to "pinch" another inch out of it..good luck..a light pinch is all you need..nothing that would hurt or danger a musky...not fully spread, but not crammed tight to try and get one more 16th of an inch out of it either...get a bump board and measure correctly and accurately...if you don't care then don't measure at all..if you do, do it right. my 2 cents.
