do you set muskie-related goals each year?

if so, what is your process for figuring out what is a realistic/achievable goal?
how do you track them? in writing? in your head? etc.
do you actually reflect back on them throughout the year?

do you feel goal-setting helps?
why or why not?

Well...

Here are my 2007 goals:

1. Fish as much or more than I did in 2006 (at least 30 days)
2. Make new friends/fish with old friends
3. Have fun

I used to set goals for size and number of fish, but its not about thatanymore. Its not why I fish. I fish because I love fishing, so the only goals that matter are 1. Fish and 2. Enjoy myself...

Pretty sure I will do both as much and as often as time permits.

I like to think about the other stuff. For example, this year I want at least one over 48, one on a top water, and 30 fish or better for the season. But I wont be dissapointed if I get none of those. (I WILL be dissapointed if I dont catch one on a glider for BN! )

Here's the thread about 2007 goals to refresh your memory if you posted.
http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=32...

I pretty much set my goals to better myself every year. But the biggest one this year for myself, is to net my dad's first fish. That would make my year...
I feel all of my goals are realistic, i don't plan on catching a 55 inch fish, but to put some numbers in the boat and maybe catch a couple quality fish is obtainable in my perspective. I've added another guide date to the list, Keith Worrall. So that's another great chance to put some quality fish in the net. Things are looking good this year. This year i'm bringing back my old fishing log, so hopefully i'll have something to reflect back on years down the road. Heck i'm already off to a better start than last year!! I spent more time fishing than hanging my head over the side of the boat.

I don't set goals like I used to and for the most part what I am looking for each season stays the same now. To fish as much as I can over the course of a season and what happens . . happens. The only goal I can think of is to have a safe season on the water, anything over and above that is gravy.

Danny boy, I'll split the price of a 30 pack of blue bullets with you, give 2 to bn(he'll then be passed out) and we'll have the rest and won't have to listen to him whine.

I like to set the standards high. I usually say we are going to put at least 3 or 4 in the boat. Whether we do or not, its all gravy. I would like to erase the goals I set earlier this year. I don't care about the numbers, but I do want my first 50. I started keeping a DETAILED fishing log this year and I would like to keep it going. I would also like to get my brother out muskie fishing and get him his first musky.

But...my number 1 goal for the year is to take out Mrs. Landsman...and Mrs. Mui baahahahhaha

I just try to better my previous year. I don't really have the time and money to chase monster fish 50+ so I fish mostly what illinois and indiana have to offer. Last year was my best year with 43 fish. Right now I have 23 for this year and if everything equals out from here on out I should shatter that big time.

I won't set those "typical" type of goals (i.e. 50 fish year, 50% of those over 40, etc). I've done that and it took the fun out of it. Always pressing to reach a number just to reach a number. Got to be too much like work. Numbers of fish that were boated were pretty solid but the time invested in that wasn't worth a crap.

Changed it up last year, just fished for fun, for myself, and not for a number. That was and will remain the goal. Have fun. Enjoy it. Total number of fish went down but instead of chasing numbers or a golden standard patterning became more efficient, experimentation went way up, and it was more enjoyable. The average time between fish boated went way way down and to me personally that is a better indication of success than fishing a ridiculous number of days just to reach a set number.

would like to be competitive in the leagues and in the hunt and do well in the wmt's we're entered in ... otherwise a few shots at big fish would be nice ... and returning to a 10 handicap. a summer without too many long trips away would be a nice touch.

Goals.???

All I want to do is fish a little more than last year, and help each of my kids get a nice quality Vermilion fish.......( I have 7 children )

I'm 51, and have Business goals that add enough stress to life,, so I won't set any kind of goals concerning my leisure / fishing life.

Oh, did I mention that I WILL put at least five 50+ incher's in the boat this year....LOL......

My lofty goal this year is 40 fish in the boat, I know I can do this if I put in the time.

50" is and always will be a goal, but to be honest I've started to change my perspective on goals. Instead of putting numbers out there, I now think of the things I want to see and experience. Topwater fish, figure-8 fish, Tailwalking fish, fish that go completely airbourne on the strike, interesting encounters that become memories for a lifetime. 40 fish in '04 is not something I'm going to remember when I'm sixty, but the fish that jumped out of the water to my eye level with my bait in its mouth in quandry bay is something I probably will.

Sometime in my fishing career, about 8 or 9 years ago, it became the goals of my sons that mattered! We'd talk about some realistic fishing goals for them, and what they could expect, and try to conquer for the upcoming fishing season.

This last year, my boys, Weston (17 last year) & Colton Hunt (12 last year), took 10th and 6th respectively in the Muskies Inc. Junior Division....in the international! Although it was a fun year, and lots of nice fish were caught in my boat, watching them win those awards meant alot to me, but MORE to them. To have had 20% of the "Top TEN" Junior fishermen in our house was cool! I am VERY proud of their accomplishments....Colton's goal is to get his 1st 50"er this year (I think he has 8 or 9 over 48"). Weston has 4 over 50"s ....working on number 5!!

So goals are geared more towards the boys now...I think they can outfish me too!

Getting out on the first day was one of my biggest goals and that happened due to the generosity of Shredder and an open seat on his boat at Pewaukee last week. Thanks again Matt, it was a blast. A few of the women at the Kenosha Gander Mountain, where I work, have been buzzing me with questions the past year about going after the elusive esox. Heck, they've even went out and bought the gear that they would need as a beginner. So over the next month or so I'm going to take them out for their first time and help them get them their first musky and I think that's a pretty good goal. I'm hoping to beat my pb of 46" but if it does'nt happen at least I'll be out on the water, something I have'nt done a lot of over the past year or two. Hope to see some of you out on the water, and have a great year!

I left the goals on the shore several years ago. I just enjoy my fishing, get out as much as I can, and occasionally retrieve them and look 'em over from time to time.

This year? Fish better.

as well as:
1) touching the 50" mark
2) getting the boat slimed earlier this year (done, times 3).
3) throwing more stuff besides gliders (k-bob's teachings were a curse wrapped in a velvet skill). I gotta get back to throwing cranks, topwaters, and hair again (bucks tied with whatever as well as spinnerbaits).
4) concentrate on waters you know well, and do not chase the "holy grail" of new lakes as much. Fish your fish, then explore.
5) secure a job that supports my addiction through fair compensation, so I can fish more than last year.
6) do not get knee surgery or a pinched nerve this year so, again, I can fish more than last year.
7) try to put Lori on a fish that tops her P.B. (I smell poop in the air when she gets a follow from a fitty, lol).

My goals are always set AFTER the day on the water.

For instance, if we fished hard all day and saw nothing, we were swinging for the fences and looking for THE big girl.

If we boated three with the largest being 38" we were after numbers today.

If we saw 10 fish and no eaters, we were just learning the lake so we could come back to catch them later.

and on and on...

Life is a whole lot sweeter when you can stack the deck!

I'd like to help my friends and some of my family get some fish, or at least some crazy follows/strikes.

I want to catch more than I did last year (late start, only caught one).

Fish more, this will be (hopfully) easy since I have a new boat and motor to use this year.

Learn new lakes, new techniques, and use new lures instead of the same 3 all the time.

The only goal necessary: 150 days on the water.

Seriously, I'm right there with all who want to get a fish in the net for friends and family. For me, the ultimate feeling is getting someone else bitten by the muskie bug. But then again I've not had Angler of the Year honors... yet.

Gotta get one on a Bulldawg, caught everything else on them. Got some great tips here on how to modify them for how I want to fish them, and I'm going to fish the hell out of 'em in '07. Either that or have a 28 inch pike rip one in half and junk the whole plan ha ha.
