I see the 7000ihsn has a 5.3 to 1 ratio, and some others have 4.0 to 1. I'm leaning towards the ihsn, just wondering if I'll be disappointed in the cranking power when casting double 10's and big cranks. What specific models do you guys use or prefer.

7001LH and it a true right handed reel, you know the cranks on the same side as your spinning reel. Handles those double 10s all day long. It has 4.7 to 1 ratio and that even faster the the 6500s - in inches per crank.

Smart move and the are biult like tanks!

IMO the 5.3 is a bit too fast for big double 10's and the 4.1 to 1 is a touch slow...the best reel I have used for the big 10's is the Penn 975
if you are getting an abu I'd lean towards the 7000 ics Pro Rocket, 4.1 to 1
nice reel.

the 7000hsn is the best option for the big baits. it has a TON of power and the ratio is perfect. the 5.3 is NOT to fast for the big baits.....it means that you dont have to turn the handle as much and therefore there is less strain and fatigue.....it is easier. it holds a ton of line and when filled up, it picks up line better than any other reel....this comes in handy when a BIG fish hits and heads straight at you, the 7000hsn is one of the few reels that can keep up with a fish in that situation. this is the best reel one the market for that job.

the key to these BIG SLOW BAITS is line pickup, these big reels like the 700hsn have the line capacity, there just isnt anything that can hold the same amount of line and pick it up as much compaired to the 700.

big brit, i disagree, the penn 975 CAN keep up with the 7000 i hsn, have you tried the penn 975? doubt it.

bn, i have the 965 and love it for saltwater. the hsn has a 5.3:1 gear ratio and the 975 has a 4.5-1 a little slower.....but the 975 does holds a lot of line as well, so the pickup is there...it's all personal preference. i just feel the hsn is better suited for that situation. whatever is clever

I've used the 7000HSN and the 975 for the big double #10 bucktails, Both will work just fine. Yes, the 975 is a little "slower" in terms of gearing, but I believe the spool diameter makes up for the difference.

It's personal preference, BUT...

Which reel is more comfortable? Which reel engages without having to make 1/2 turn of the handle? Which reel do you expect to still be working 5 years down the road?

EA, 975, hands down. Built like a tank in good ol' USA. I ran 7000s for years, still do use one or two but fish 975s most of the time. They fish the 'right speed' for me. Because of the slightly higher gear ratio and slightly smaller spool diameter, the retrieve speed is nearly identical to a 7000. I would stay away from the 5.3-1 ratio 7000s for big hard-pulling baits. Higher ratio=less torque.
