Posts: 59 Location: Chicago western burbs | Guys, I am new to trolling motors, and want to purchase my first one. I am running a 18ft lund alaskan with a 50 on back. Approx 1000 pounds. I fish big water at times. I have looked at the new minnkotas and the terrova is 1499 the power v2 is 750. One is 80 lbs, the other 70. Is there a big differnce between the two to justify that price. Do i need 80 lbs for my boat? I also have a feeling that not everything is included to rig the boat when i purchase the trolling motor. What else will i need to be up and running? Thanks in advance.

if money is no object get the terrova, $1249 for that 80 lb from bass pro or cabelas. if you are on a budget get the 70 lber, 24 volt and get 2 big batteries to run it. that will be sufficient for your rig for sure. big water or small. imo.

Posts: 2323 Location: Stevens Point, WI | Personally, I think the biggest thing about the new Terrova is it's got a new deploy/stow feature and a redesigned footpad seeing they have had so many issues with the old ones. But they did redesign the footpad on the V2 so hopefully it will be better also. That and it's the newest and greatest thing on the market right now as far as trolling motors. I have used both motors with 70lbs and 80lbs thrust models on similar boats. I personally have not seen a big difference to where I needed to spend a couple hundred dollars more for a different motor. Now for your rigging. I know on the Alaskan the trolling motor plug-in is an optional feature, do you have one at your bow? Cause if not, that will be your first thing you will have to install.

Posts: 1996 Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | I ran a Crestliner 1850 for two years with a 140 on the back. It was a much heavier rig and I had a 65# PD on it. Only a couple times did I wish I had more power, and that was in pretty extreme conditions. I think power wise a 70 should be fine, I am running an Tuffy 1890 with a 200 now and am running an 80# and have never needed more. 80#'s is a butt load of thrust. May be a bit overkill for the Alaskan.

I am dumping my Minn Kota Power Drive to be replaced by a Maxxum cable drive. If you get in a situation where you need to really hold a small spot and fish the spot on the spot in the wind, the power dirves/terrova do not respond fast enough to the turn corrections you will need to make. If you are only going to fish miles and miles of weeds then a power drive may be good for you.

have you seen how fast the terrova's turn? I'll take an autopilot any day over having to have my foot on the pedal of a maxxum 95% of the time.

Posts: 605 Location: Marshfield, WI | If you want to save a few bucks, check out http://www.trollnmotors.com/ I got the Minn Kota Maxxum for $525 shipped. Bass Pro had it for $780 plus shipping. Not sure if they have the terrova or not. They mostly carry Minn Kota and Motorguide. Krishna

Posts: 2091 Location: Stevens Point, WI | You would be perfectly happy with a 24V Minnkota Power Drive. I have this on my 2004 Tuffy 17ft. Deep V which is a really heavy boat and it is more than adequate in even 3 footers. I am able to do about 2 mph or so with it. Make sure you go with a longer shaft too. I have the 60" shaft and I have not had it pop out of the water yet.
