It appears that Lake of the Woods is ice free, at least around Nestor Falls and Kenora. Crow Lake should be clear in a few days. It's warm and windy.

How's the lake levels, Bob? Thanks for the report, now I'll be thinking of LOTW every 7 seconds. m

Still have ice around at the Angle. We are ice free north of Oak, but still ice bound from Brush Island to Young's Bay. I would expect that to be open by the end of the week, but the big lake still looks like winter.

Just down to the mouth of the Warroad river, and there's around 40 miles of ice yet on the big lake. Looks like another week or so before it all goes off here.

The northerns and sturgeon are bitting.

The lake is low, with very little run off. We need some rain bad.

Bob,

Being the Guru out east, do you think a guy would have a problem next Monday making it to Whitefish from here? I hear the trout calling.

THis wind today should be kicking some serious ice-butt!

For those of you wondering on water levels here is a link that will tell you what is happening in MN as far as flows go.

Frank:

Just talked to a friend in Whitefish, and there's still lots of ice yet. The area around three-sisters (the trout hole) is still pretty solid.

He has a cabin in Regina Bay that over looks the whole bay, and it's starting to break away from shore, but that's all. He says that the ice looks pretty black and is starting to break-up. Todays wind should help.

I'll be calling Gary at Vic and Dots today to see what the report is from the south end of Whitefish.

I'll let you know what I hear. The trout are calling me also.

Silver Scale:

Interesting site. Here's another one that has lots of info on the LOTWs, and many other Canadian lakes and watersheds. http://www.lwcb.ca/

Jake and I did well on the sturgeon, must have caught 20 or so on Wednesday, and around half that many of Thursday. We where going to go today, but there's a NW wind off the lake ice, and it makes for a cold afternoon.

Here's one of Wednesdays sturgeon.

I'm not up there yet. Relying on the reports from friends in Nestor Falls. I don't think many have ventured out to see how it is out in the islands. I'm glad Doug answered your question for you. I used to fish out of Bonnie Brae years ago for walleye opener. Love that part of the Lake. I remember when there was still lots of rotten ice on opening day in 1996. Don't think that will happen this year. Smoke some of those Lake Trout for me. Boy they're good.

Will:

The sturgeon are caught in the Rainy River. Some are river residents year round, and others are LOTWs residents on their way to spawning grounds.

They have made a remarkable comeback in the past 25 years or so. As you can see from the number of boats in the photo this is becoming a very popular sport.
Five years ago there wouldn't have been another boat in the photo.

They are great fish! Hardest pulling fish in fresh water. It took 15-20 minutes to land the fish in the photo using muskie tackle.

Just down to the lake, and the wind is doing a number on the ice. It's out so far now I can barely see it. One more wind switch and it should be pretty much gone.

I think you'll be good to go by Monday. I'm going to try it Friday. The folks at Vic and Dot's say they got to Fergus Island last Friday.

Here's a photo from Regina Bay this afternoon. I'll bet most of this will be gone tomorrow.

Looks like most of the ice is gone from LOTWs as of this afternoon.

This about normal for the past 10-15 years or so. For many years May 9th was average, must be something to gobal warming or whatever is causing the ice to go off a week or so sooner.
