Posts: 1316 Location: Madison, WI | I was reading a pinned post above about cleaning and lubricating new abu reels, how many do this? I just got 3 new reels from abu and I'm wondering if it's really necessary to tear all 3 down and relubricate. Here's the link: http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=33...

one thing that a lot of reel techs emphasize is to clean/lube new reels in order to replace the grease that it comes with from the factory with oil. the factory uses grease so it stays put when the reels are being shipped, sitting on the shelf, etc., but you want oil when you're actually using the reel.

Location: Athens, Ohio | I recently purchased an ABU 6500 TCM, and fished it right out of the box (muskie on second cast!). The reel felt, well, stiff for most of the day. Is that the grease problem? It started to limber up a bit, where do they apply grease that I need to clean out? m

Posts: 1316 Location: Madison, WI | Any oil recommendations? I think i still have some oil from abu. Would the same hold true for other reels? I'm thinking about purchasing a calcutta. Edited by Magruter 4/19/2007 9:54 AM

Posts: 8829 | Mikie, the whole inside of the reel is pretty much coated with grease. I don't go too nuts cleaning it all out on a new reel, I just get most of it out of there with a paper towel and a Q tip, and put a tiny drop of oil on anything that moves and doesn't have teeth. (One thing I ALWAYS do though, is take apart the drag and clean the washers. Grease always seems to find its way in there) The grease they use from the factory is pretty thin -- reel oil kind of liquifies it a bit. Another thing you can do is just open it up and spray the whole thing with reel magic. Kind of a halfway fix, but it's quick and easy. At the end of the first season is where I do a complete tear down and cleaning. From that point, the main drive gear gets a little grease, everything else gets oil. After that they're really easy to clean, because its just oil in there and they don't crud up as much. As for what kind? I use the Abu stuff that comes with the reels, and South Bend grease. South bend is because I like the tube it comes in -- easy to squeeze out just enough. I bought a tube of the Penn stuff for my saltwater reels, the blue goop... It's kind of a heavy oil, maybe 80 weight? I'm wondering if that's a better choice for everything instead of using both oil and grease? If it works for saltwater its gotta be good for muskie reels, right? Edited by esoxaddict 4/19/2007 10:02 AM

Posts: 336 Location: Wheeling, IL. | Scott, you where at Rhilander last year when Check Nelson gave his talk. He said it is almost mandatory to open up and clean the grease out. Especially because they are made overseas and have the need to protect them from sea salt etc. Most new reals come with a small tube of oil but in Spence Petros classes he advocates using sewing machine oil. I too tear them apart, clean all the grease out (there is not that much to begin with and it is only to protect the metals during shelf life IMHO). I have gone away from using grease at all. Just the straight ABU oil in the fat bottle that I belive has silicote in it? When the gears are greased (especially on the palming side of the reel) that is where you see the stiffness come from. Get that grease out of there and only oil the spindle shaft, and maybe a light coat on the gearing itself. Not a whole lot of wear and tear on that side since the whole side is to work the levelwind. Then, on the water, it's oil every morning on the worm drive of the main reels being used. Steve
