I got this FAT,Heavy fish on 4-12-2007 at Cave Run Lake. I didn't have anybody with me so I didn't get a girth measurement
She was a pre spawn 48.5 " fish and felt heaver than most 52-53" summer muskies.
The bumpboard is 7" wide and this fish hung over the board by 1.5"-2"
I'm thinking this fish might be 39-41lbs. What do you guys think?

You'd need a 26 inch girth to get to 40 pounds. Do you think she was that big?

Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | I might be wrong but I figure the girth like this:
The board is 7" wide, the fish hangs over say 1.5"..., that = 8.5"
The girth measurement is around the fat part of the fish, so I figure 8.5" x 3.142(pie) = approx. 26.7"
Now this may be on the bigger side of things but even if this fish had a 25.5" girth it would weigh approx. 39.42 lbs. according to weight calculator listed below.
All that I know is it was one very heavy fish.
I think Tony Grant may be feeding those fish some of His World Famous Spaghetti..........

| not to burst your bubble but it takes one huge fish to hit 40 lbs.
Your fish though heavy is not going to come close to nudging 40.

Location: nationwide | My guess is within a couple pounds of 35 pounds. But the "pre-spawn" could throw that off based off the egg mass. While not exceptionally long she is a big girl for sure. Love the look of fish with big bellies. Awesome fish and picture.

| Here's my guess.. I did it a little different being the fish isn't perfectly round. The fish flattens out a little when you lay them down and most of the fish looks like it follows the width of your bump board except for her momma ponch.
So I say if the fish is roughly 5" deep and 7" wide then that puts her around 24 to 24.5" girth. The calculator says a fish with a 24" girth is around 34lbs. Error to the heavy side, I would say 35lbs'ish. Any way you look at it can't beat that for a start to the new year! |

She is heavy in the egg area but not thick all the way through...my guess is 33-35 lbs as well....
I will take 30plus pounders all day long!!

Location: Central Iowa | I think they vary too much to be accurate...I went netting with the DNR a few weeks ago and we caught two prespawn muskies...one was 46" that went 29 pounds and the other was 46.5" that went 36 pounds. |

We had a couple 45.5 inchers this year that the DNR caught that went 33 lbs....but they were TANKS from beak to tail.....

| I'm definitely with Cory....30-33 lbs. for sure...and the fight sounds like it deserved to be a 40 lber. That is a great story, and I was wish I was in the boat when ya caught it!!

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Very nice fish for sure. Low to mid thirtys depending on egg mass, could go more if the fish is packed with eggs. Hard to tell from the picture how thick she is besides the huge egg mass.
Upper 20's in a week or two after she spawns.
Congrats on a very very nice start to the 2007 season. You got to love pre spawn fatties. |

This fish got all three hooks in her mouth!! It came out of 2-3 ft. of water and acted like a 35" fish..... twice it came out of the water and did the Moon Dance on top of the water.
I knew I had a good fish on but didn't realize how heavy it was until I lifted it out of the net....
I fish Vermilion, Mil lacs, Leach and other BIG fish waters so I have an idea what heavy fish feel like , this one felt pretty heavy....
Was it a 40lbr. ???? probably not, but it was close...... and it was in KENTUCKY!!!
As a side note :
I thought this fish was bleeding out of the gills pretty good so that is why I didn't get a girth measurement ,I wanted to get this fish back into the water ASAP. But after i released this beautiful fish I noticed that I was bleeding ( cut thumb ) and not the fish...... ........ She's still out there boy's..........

Unless that fish is very thick across the back, it won't be much over 30lbs.
A saggy belly doesn't mean much unless the fish is thick as well.

If you are convinced it was that heavy why ask everybody on the board?
If you are wondering why argue with everyones opinion.
This fish does not seem to have the "shape" of a fish that heavy, and it should have fat bulges in the rear end if it was near or better than 40. She doesn't look like she has them. Awfully good fish for Cave Run regardless. |

I'm not arguing with anybody, I was just curious as to what this fish weighed.
I really don't know, thats why I asked some of the "experts" that visit this board.
Now that I have a bunch of Good opinions from Experienced muskie hunters and the fact that I'm the only one that lifted, saw, and felt this girl my opinion has changed some what....
It wasn't 40 lbs but it was at least 33-37 lbs. Thats my story , and I'm sticking to it..... All I know is it was one of the fattest fish I have ever boated,

| Jerome...I lift a lot too...bench press plenty but after the exhileration of fighting a big fish, 30 -35 lbs seems like a ton...
your fish was probably a good 30 lber, maybe 33-35 but not over 35 imo.
having lifted what was for sure a 40 lb fish last sept it is amazing how heavy 40 lbs can feel after a few seconds of holding..
nice fish to start the year.
go get a 40 lber now

I will say that some of you people from Mn., Wi., Ny.,Mi., Canada, and other frozen states need to get down to some of the southern muskie lakes next winter/spring in order to chase a few of these big girls around.
It really does help cure cabin fever.........Well maybe a little bit.
