| This question is for the entire board, would like input from both sides! If you are out with a guide and he/she is fishing with you and hooks a fish, do you expect the guide to hand the rod off to you? Guides, do you hand off a fish when hooked? I know there are different circumstances where maybe your out all day without a fish, then naturally you would try to hand off the rod. I'm just wondering in general, say you just got out on the water and you hooked one, what would you do? | |||
| |||
| Put it this way...WHOEVER hooks a fish + doesn't hand me the rod is taking a dip in the drink...JUST KIDDING of course![;)] Personally it doesn't bother me in the least; I've been w/ Crash a few times + stood there watching him nail fish + would never think of asking him to hand over the rod...perhaps I may be TOO laid back but if I hook the fish, then I'll reel it in...someone else hooks it they reel it in, regardless of who or how much the trip cost me. I go first of all because I enjoy going....the food/snacks...not being involved in the office fire fights...sleeping in a different bed....sometimes I like to sit down + open a Coke Cola/eat, sometimes just start grinning + hum a tune or 2....wrapping an expensive bait around a limb just out of reach...hang over the side of the boat + blow bubbles....main thing is to enjoy meself on the water![:sun:] | |||

| To be honest I don't want the rod handed to me. I wouldn't feel like I caught the fish. And I also don't mind if a guide does catch a fish, because most of the time there in the back of the boat. | |||
| |||
| I'd be grabbing the net and trying to knock it off! Really, whoever hooks it, lands it. I fish with a guide by myself most of time and insist he fish. I just enjoy seeing people catch fish....me, the guide, the boat next to us (unless it's Slamr). Many experienced fishermen would feel a bit insulted, I think, to have a hooked fish offered to them. Ego.....what a wonderful thing BrianW[:p] | |||

| Having been out with numerous guides,I would not even think of taking a handoff while casting.The way I look at is they hooked,they can bring it in.After all,they like to catch muskies too! Trolling or sucker fishing is another story.The guide asks who gets the first fish and then go from there.Good Luck to All,Paul | |||

| If I hook a fish I always offer to hand my rod off (only when guiding) most of the time my clients will refuse but I've had a few take it which is fine with me.(the only time I don't do this is a boat side strike) I've never had a younger angler refuse. I say it's up to the clients, remember it's their charter.[:)] | |||

| When I go out with a guide, it's a time for me to learn: be it ways to work different lures, how to work the boat in and around structure, or to learn new spots on the water. I love to catch fish, don't get me wrong, but I'd never want the guide to hand a rod off to me....just wouldn't be the same I guess. When I fish with a guide, or just a regular old partner its a team effort, we are both working to put fish in the boat, regardless of who gets the fish on the end of their rod. Slamr | |||

| I always asked before hand on the first spot. Clears the air and Yes I have had some anglers that wanted my rod when I popped one. But 99% refuse. I often put my rod down when I pop one not to catch two or three..but again clients have insisted that I pick my rod back up and join them in the fun, (but I made them say that). They want to see fish no matter how. I had a 5 fish day once. I caught 4 and the client caught 1 and even some folks in Hayward got wind of it and gave me crap. But really the guy keeped on insisting that I fish and would have been mad if I did not. Trolling...I would never take a rod. I ran four rods and they would pick right or left side between the two guys. Once the right popped, they left side guy would get his crack at all four to better his chances. That always made if fair for the clients. Now that I am not guiding...my daughter can have me rod.[;)] | |||

| I'm with Chuck. The client is paying the freight, if they want the rod, they get the rod. I try to clear that up before a fish is on. Had a guy once who definitely wanted the rod if a fish was hooked because he had never seen a musky, muchless caught one. When I got a nice mid 20# fish on he got so wrapped up in what I was doing with the fish that he refused to take the rod. Afterwards, he said that he thought he learned more by watching than doing. He got a leason in using the net and did a great job. I still wish he had landed the fish, but the main thing is he learned for the next time. | |||

| I AGREE, IF THE CLIENT IS PAYING YOU TO TAKE HIM OR HER FISHING, HE OR SHE SHOULD GET TO CHOOSE WEATHER THEY WANT THE ROD OR NOT. THIS WILL BE MY FIRST YEAR GUIDEING AND WILL GIVE MT CLIENTS THE CHOISE TO TAKE OR NOT TO TAKE. ALSO LIKE JASON SAID, ONE FISH AND I WOULD STOP FISHING, JUST DONT SEEM RIGHT TO BE CATCHING FISH WILE YOUR CLIENTS ARE NOT. JUST A 2 CENT THOUGHT OUT OF A 1 CENT BRAIN. HAPPY HUNTING DUCKS MUSKY HUNTS DUCK | |||

| I am there to have the clients catch fish, but like other guides said most clients won't take the hand off. But the way I see it is that it is just like trolling, you let them reel in the fish caught on your rod so handing the rod off casting is the same as a fish caught trolling. It's their charter they have the call. [:sun:] | |||

| I fish with the clients OK, and I always offer to hand the rod off if I hook a fish. MOST take it! Had some repeat clients tell me the second year that they didn't want me to hand the rod off. After I caught a dandy (fishing behind them-I always fish from the back of the boat), I told them that they missed an opportunity to learn how to handle a big fish. One guy changed his mind and the other didn't. I have a lot of clients that have never before caught a muskie. While I would prefer the durn "green fish" would hit their lure, often their casting skills do not allow them to get the bait in the right spot (we work on that too!). Were I not casting, we would have many blank days. I'm paid to show them fish, and if having that extra bait in the water can help do it, I cast unless asked not to. I have never had anyone tell me not to cast. Have on occasion not started out casting and was asked "why?" and instructed to do so! Muskie regards, Larry Ramsell www.larryramsell.com | |||

| If I didn't cast it and I didn't hook it, it ain't my fish. I expect that the guide would fish with me just like a friend I have known for years. If he hooks and gets one, it's just as fun to watch him get it. The whole object is learning in the first place and putting fish in the boat too. His fish or mine it's still in the boat. I really would be embarassed to expect that someone hand me a rod with a fish on it. | |||

| I've fished with several guides. They have mostly all fished with me. I've had them catch fish and offer the rod. I've always turned it down. I figure I hire a guide to teach me. Methods, location, patterns, new water, presentations of various lures. I'm there to learn, not just reel in a fish that I wasn't skilled enough to make it eat. Besides, I'd like to think that I'm also fishing with a freind. I like the talk, and the comraderie. Now, about the only time I have a problem is with this short little dude up around Hayward way. [;)]He's always making me throw the heavieast lure in his boat, or burning BIG Boo, er, um, bucktails on humid, 95 degree days. All day long. He wears my butt out! All the while, he laughs to himself, as he throws some wimpy little bait or a topwater. Then, when HE gets lucky, and hooks a fish, he asks me why I missed that one. Then, to add insult to injury, I have to take a picture of him with the fish. Now I know darn well that fish is only 40, but it looks closer to 50 next to him! And then, he sends me a copy in the mail. He never tells me the name of the lake, and always makes me wear a blindfold on the way to and from. He just shrugs, and says "It's Lake X! What'd you expect?"[:bigsmile:] [:bigsmile:] [:bigsmile:] [;)] [;)] Seriously, I enjoy fishing with him, and I consider him my freind. He's put me on some nice fish, too. I just can't wait till he catches that fish that will look small when he holds it up!![:praise:] Tight lines in 1 1/2 days!! Shep | |||

| Shep, could the Tiny Tot's initials be Dave D.? How sad it is to pay to fish with a little man who ridicules you all day long! We muskie fishermen are sensitive, we don't deal well to abuse! | |||

| Like most have said, if I hook a fish, I'll try to hand it off. Most clients won't take the rod, but some do. I still love the look on their faces when they feel that powerful surge! Steve @ G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods. http://www.herefishyfishy.com | |||

| I would never ask for the guides rod or want it but I think the proper edicate would be for the guide to offer, that way you are covered. | |||
| |||
| I agree that this needs to be decided before the boat leaves the dock. Personally, I would not take the rod ("it ain't my fish" was already said) but I'd sure want to give Jon a shot at boating it! You know, knocking it off with the net does sound like a good idea, but then again, it is probably a long swim back to the car. m[:bigsmile:] | |||

| Steve V. L., It's ok. He rarely reads any of these posts. But just in case, I didn't mention any names. You did!! LOL Tight lines tomorrow!!!!! Shep | |||

| Shep and Steve VL, I feel your pain! Man up, you crybabies!!!LOL Next, you'll be watching Dr. Phil on Oprah! Sensitively, Dave Dorazio | |||

| I second what has been said here, like Jason, I get the "do you want the rod" question cleared up before the situation arrises. I never take a trolling or a sucker rod, I make'em flip a coin, arm wrestle or play patty-cakes to figure out who gets the first strike...[:sun:] I have only been guiding a few seasons but to date most of my clients have said, "if you catch it Mark it's your fish"...
