Looking for advise. I have a 1991 14 ft aluminum boat that is in need of some maintenance. The carpet on the back bench seat, livewell, and console needs replacement. Also, the decking needs to be replaced as well. I'm having a hard time finding 1/2 inch marine grade plywood (that's what's on it now) and am wondering if anyone has a suggestion on where to get this. While at Menards earlier this week they said 3/4 inch marine grade is all they have access to. I'm hoping to stay with 1/2 from a weight standpt. Menards did have 7/16inch plastic in 4'x8' sheets. This would likely never wear out, but does anyone have thoughts on using it? Is it rigid enough to stand on? Will screws hold without stripping out. (That's a problem with my livewell cover now.) Can anyone suggest the type of carpet I should use?

I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

D2Bucktail

D2BUCKTAIL,DEPENEDING ON YOUR MOTOR SIZE I WOULD GO AS THICK AS POSSIBLE.I REBUILT MY ENTIRE BOAT FROM HEAD TO TOE(30HP TILLER W/ A RAISED DECK USED TO BE A 40HP CLOSED BOW,FLAT DECK CONSOLE). IF YOU HAVE A EXISTING FLOOR TO WORK WITH YOUR IN BUSINESS. START BY REMOVEING THE DECKS IN WHOLE OR 4FT PIECES AND USE THOSE PIECES AS TEMPLATES.AS FOR TYPES OF PLYWOOD, GREEN TREATED WILL WORK FINE,THE THICKER THE BETTER.I GOT MY CARPET AT FLEET FARM,HOLDING UP VERY WELL 5YRS+.USE RIVETS!!!!!

I used 1/2 inch green treated plywood and with proper bracing it works just fine. Check it out:

Also, be sure to use stainless steel decking screws, bolts, hardware, etc etc.
Lemme know if there's any questions, m

Ill ditto the green treated plywood. I went and bought a clearance priced can of exterior grade latex paint (most places mark mis-colored gallons down to near nothing). Since youre carpeting over it color wont matter. I actually have a coat of purple under my carpet. I think I may have even done two+ coats...what else would I do with purple exterior latex paint??? I did mine 8years ago and used the recommended marine carpet glue and she's still as tight as can be. Parts of the boat with the factory installed carpeting have already come lose...go figure.

Just bought 3/4" green treated for my rear deck, vs. going with the marine grade(didn't see the point). Just be sure not to 'seal' the board as I have been told that treated can rot/warp if not allowed to dry properly. Just carpet it and away you go. If you paint, just paint one side maybe.
