Where do muskies spawn in the lake ? And do they spawn in the same places in the lake regardless if the lake are in Mn. ,Wi. , Il. Ia., or Canada.

Thanks, Jerome

Now how can all the muskies spawn in the same place if they are in different lakes???

OK, enough of the smart a$$ response.

Good question. If they were hatched there then they do spawn in the same place every year. I'm sure the homing in their senses draws them to a certain spot.

However, if they are stock. I don't know. Maybe this is the reason why we can't get any natural production from stock fish? If they head to the landing where they were placed in the lake to spawn, that isn't the best place for those eggs to develop.

In Canada, they only spawn in Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba, for the most part.

Pick up the lastest Musky Hunter magazine, got mine yesterday and there is a pretty good article on spawning locations and habits of early season fish.

Top H2O,

In general muskie spawn in shallow water bays that tend to be located on the north or northeast side of the lake. These bays are sheltered from the cool NW winds that occurr in spring-thus they tend to have the warmest water. Bottom composition varies, but suitable substrates include veg., sand, and wood. Soft bottom bays are less desireable because eggs deposited tend to suffocate or get buried. However, research has shown that dark soft bottom bays with significant wood accumulation tend to produce fairly well (the eggs land on the wood and are kept out of the anoxic sediment and therefore survive).

This general trend hold true throughout the muskies range. However, some lake will never have naturally reproducing muskies...

Muskie! nut,

Research has shown that most muskies do spawn in the same locations (lake or bay) each year. Dr. John Farrell (University of Syracuse) showed that somewhere around 90% of muskies in the St. Lawrence spawned in the same bay in consecutive years. My graduate research showed that about 60% spawned in the same lake ( in a 10 lake chain) each year.

Yes, we agree and that is what I said in my 1st post.

My question is when a fish is stocked, how do they know where to spawn? Do they head to the warmest waters? Or do they go where they were placed into the lake? Any theories on that?

That's the million dollar question. If you can find spawning grounds the fish are always near. Think about it. If they fish are born there and they have cover and food why would they leave?

Normally in protected bays with the right weeds. Don't know what they are called but they are bright green.
