With the weather looking great I decided to get on the water somewhere. The Big O and I headded down to Kinkaid in southern IL for a few days of muskie fishing. We got to the launch and it was packed at 9am. I couldn't believe all the trailers and fishermen. We launched and parked in the last spot available. After checking out the shallows(65) and main lake water temps(57) I was getting worried about the spawn. Well after a long afternoon of casting and talking to a bunch of people we figured we made the correct call to fish the lower deeper sections of Kinkaid. After a good ol pounding we ended the day with a couple flashes from fish and I had a 38 go around a few times.

Now what do we do? Keep pounding or head back north to Shelbyville?

Well, with the spawn in full swing we decided to head to Shelbyville to try for some pre-spawn fatties.

Monday we started out early at the crack of 10AM and found 50 degree main lake temps and 58 in the coves we fished. The shad was everywhere back in the coves but no fish showed, just shad impailed by our hooks. We worked traps, glide baits, pull baits and crank baits shallow to deep with no follows until 3pm. Time to try something else.

So we trolled the coves and came up with a very respectable 41-incher on a shallow invader, the silver one. She hit at 4pm going 3.8mph over 28ft of water in Lithia Cove. We had one more rip after that but we were happy to score one good fish after all the looking around. Now we had a nice pre-spawn female muskies trolling but we wanted to cast. So we casted the hours away Tuesday morning and then trolled for a couple hours before calling it quits around 2pm and came back to the cold in Wisconsin.

So anyone looking to get out and stick a muskies it's now time. It felt great to stick a good muskie. Go get yourself one.

Thats the way to start the season off Mike. Smokies "CEO" had said you were on the way down there, and had high hopes for the Rattletrap to score some big numbers. Chad Cain had fished that area earlier and they said Chad had scored some large numbers on that bait.
I was able to get the boat ready with the temp in the high 70's up here and tjhe only thing I caught was some great sun.....

Great start to the season....
