I was just thinking about the "new" big blade bucktail trend...I know its probably a combination of the two, but which is more of a factor?....The big blades or the size of the baits?...I've made some 71/2-8 inch baits with flashabou/starflash skirt combinations with number 10 blades (see pic) counting on bigger vibration (and flashabou flash)...If I remember correctly some really nice fish were caught on "regular sized" Llungen tails with an inline blade (different vibration)...So what do you think...Big vibration or big profile?

I think both attributes are important, especially when fishing stained or murky water.

Got to be the vibration and the amount of water it moves.

I havent had any experience with the big #10's yet, but i would say vibration. Although it doesnt hurt with those flashabou/starflash skirt combinations. Pretty cool lookin baits you made!

I think in clear water profile would be more important where as in stained, vibration is more critical. kdawg

good looking baits.

I feel the flashabou adds the most with its breathing and flash.

Since those larger bucktails will be too hard for my grandson to use, I plan on making some smaller sizes.

What's interesting to me is with the large blades one is forced to fish a little slower. At least when I threw a large double bladed bucktail, it seemed harder to pull and it made me want to slow down my retrieve.

I wonder if bucktails with smaller double blades and flashabou wouldn't have similar results if fished a little slower.

Good point Kdawg...So, its kind of a vision vs lateral line thing...I can understand vision being a bigger factor in clear water but which prompts a greater response/trigger to strike overall? ...Thanks for the compliment MM

Thanks, Muskie Bob...I know what you mean about the pull...I made one with double willows hoping to be able to burn that one a little faster...I also have some magnum french blades that I'll use on a bait or two...

Seems like a one-two punch. The vibration gets there attention and brings them out. The flash makes them commit.

Kinda like a hot chick shakin under a disco ball. Hard to resist. LOL

i was at the milw muskie show last night and since i missed the chicago show, this was my first of the season. i felt like everywhere i looked all i saw were double 10's!!!!! i did pick one up w/ the flashabou and my guess is the vibration, espcially at night will put some nice fish in the boat.

Nice baits Matt / Its a combo thing most of the time / every lake or system has its trigger.

Awesome looking lures bud. In my opinion, fish pick up vibration on their lateral lines way before they're in sight range no matter what the water clarity. They feel it long before seeing it.

Dacron&DIP stated that muskies pick up vibrations in their lateral lines long before seeing a bait regardless of water clarity. Maybe, but then how do you explain the effectiveness of willow-leaf style bucktails that provide tons of flash and little vibration? Also, do you think muskies in clear water feel a bulldawg or glider before they see it? I still believe water clarity and light conditions do play a factor in a muskies feeding behavior and as musky hunters we have to choose are baits accordingly. Kdawg
