well it looks like a duck but you will have to make a new one after each fish

I've got to be honest....I couldnt see anyone throwing that. How would you be certain that it would land upright or that you could even cast it all considering it is made of styrofoam. I dont really even think it looks like a duck either. Just a jumbled mess of old feathers. Also what action do you plan on getting out of the "bait"? Obviously it would be a top water but what is it going to do to trigger a strike? The silhouette of the body on the water would just be a blob floating there, nothing is going to cause commotion on the surface. You would need to create something like the duckling bait that is already on the market that has the things on the side of the wings that spin and kick up water like when a duckling runs across the water.

I think you might have the imagination to create a cool bait, but scrap this project and start over on a new one. Good luck!

Mike---
I'd throw that thing and you know it. Heck, I've thought about building a harness to strap a live squirrel or a chipmunk in.

I am in no way shape or form insulting the guy. He asked for comments and I gave my opinion. Perhaps since it is still in progress he plans on addressing some of the issues I addressed. Yes ulbian you would throw that. I do think that he has potential on his idea but needs to be reworked.

Blackduck, please do not read my original post as ripping on you and your idea. I am just saying what it looks like and perhaps you have ideas to make this thing really cool. I do think you have a great imagination and you could make a cool bait. Just keep brainstorming your ideas! Good luck!!

Well now thats art!!!! but id scrap that project to be honest with you i cant think of any ways to make that strong enough to withstand a hit from a fish that is known to have over 1200 psi in its jaw. Maybee try to glue the feathers on to a peice of wood or something!!!!!!!

Brandon, stay with it. You're on your way. You'll learn from each attempt.

This was my first attempt from many years ago...an old bait that I tried to repaint with sponges...

A very good and innovative lure maker told me to ask myself what I wanted the bait to do and build it. if this bait does what you want it to do work from there to make it more durable. but you gotta start somewhere. Keep plugging away.

I like that bait....real potential there....what with the two styrofoam balls stacked up and all those nice feathers stuck on there..it Looks like a duck...maybe some duck scent would be good.....I GOT IT...you know at build-a-bear they have those little electronic sound makers.....just stick a duck sounding one on there with some of that duck scent.....

....now....how to get hooks attached...

Seriously though....very cool.

You know, this might be a revolutionary idea for sucker rigging in the fall. You could go duck hunting and muskie fishing at the same time. Just take your duck and use it as a bobber for a sucker rig. Then you can sit back while the duck swims wherever the sucker leads it, and wait and see what happens first. Will you get to shoot a duck that is attracted to the area, or will you get to catch yourself a muskie? And if a muskie hits your bobber, then even better, although that would probably make the other ducks leave the area as soon as possible.

Q: Do little ducks and geese dive for food like mamma and pappa?

If so, make a "Diver Duck" or "Diving Baby Loon" I think muskies and pike like little tender duckies!!!! Would be novel I think too!!??? I have only seen top water duck lures... See my bad drawing for what I mean. You would need to weight it right and have some type of diving surface on the front of the lure. If made right and worked right you could also "walk the duck" vs making it go sub surface. My Weagle will go subsurface if worked right. Yes....this could be a nice little surface/subsurface lure.

Just my opinion!
James

PS-I still want to see that little foam sucker blow up into a thousand little pieces from a 50" muskie! LOL Would be a nice video to start the "Next Bite" show.

I love it, Blackduck! The Pheasant feathered tail is a nice touch. Let's see.. a bird that's half pheasant and half duck... what could we call it?

Thanks, Jed. It was a pattern that actually caused mass panic and exodus among the fish, so I don't use it anymore.
