Posts: 1188 Location: Iowa | So the winter boredum has set in beyond control today...I decided to catalog all the baits that I have at home right now that aren't in the boats at the shop (my bucktails only)...this brought me to wonder if I take too many baits everytime I go out of if I should have certain the baits I take out...all winter I have been telling myself I will only take 10 baits... 1. Posts: 35 Location: Johnsonville, Wisconsin | Yor are correct is thinking that you have too many lures. This really hurts your catching percentage. I worked out a plan for you: Throw half of them in a box and send them to me. It's a win-win for us! And your boat will plane faster.... Seriously, though, I don't think I saw any Shallow Dogs. You do need at least one. Daffy

Posts: 1188 Location: Iowa | The snax is an original 14" Sucker...my baits look new because of the lighting effects that were used...and beings as how I have only caught 10 muskies total a lot of them are still in a newer condition...and I don't think I will be sending half to anyone...I was just curious on your guys input not a bashing session...

Posts: 551 Location: Columbus, Georgia | Great post and an issue for me that at times has proven a double-edged sword. I have taken as few as 3 or 4 different baits in the boat ... each in 4 to 5 different color patterns. So, I still end up with as many as 20+ baits in the boat when I swore to myself that I would throw only a few. I then rationalize that even though I might be switching baits more often than I should ... I am working toward providing Mr. Musky with the pattern presentation that will ultimately ring his little dinner bell. My bait list would depend on time of year, weather and water conditions, etc. Craig Edited by cjrich 2/11/2007 8:58 PM

Posts: 364 Location: Kentucky | Tough topic, Perc. It seems like the curse of the toolbox: too many baits and you don't know what in there, or can't find it; too few in the box and suddenly you don't have the tool for the job with you. I tend to haul around 125 or so in two tackle boxes, although I try to have 10 or 15 in mind when I hit the water. With two hours (one way) drive to the three closest lakes, I have plenty of time to set the roster!

Posts: 1237 Location: South Portsmouth, KY | Heck, im always afraid of leaving the one thing that might work home. So i usually take my whole tackle box with about 70 baits in it with me. Just cant stand the thought of leaving something behind!

Posts: 571 Location: Williamstown, WV | I only take 10 baits out each trip...I'd rather learn to use 10 baits perfectly than to just be average at 100 baits. Too many baits = less fish in boat.

Posts: 7088 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Your starters are all big baits, your benchwarmers are for the most part, smaller. Maybe thats part of why you have only 10 fish to your credit. Might want to shuffle the lineup a bit to fit the fish, and less to fit your whatever that makes you think you need to throw big lures.

Why only take 10 baits? you never know what they might want that day you are on the water..it could be a mepps marabou or a pounder...take a large variety...you can fit a ton of baits in a soft tackle box with 4 or 5 plano's... When I'm in my own boat I take a zillion baits..but they are stored in the front deck extension in Plano's and then I do have my bait tube around my butt seat filled....I think taking a lot of baits isn't needed..but ya never know what they might be going on that day...when I go up north I take a soft tackle box with 4 or 5 plano's...that gets me by as I know those lakes well enough and have a variety... just remember sometimes fish want small baits, even in the summer/fall and peak times...I would mix up your lineup and include more baits that are smaller in the mix... when I jump in someone elses boat I take the same soft tackle bag as I know if I didn't bring it..they probably have it.... taking 10 baits to me is silly....taking 200 is silly too, even though I do it...but maybe 30-50 is a happy medium!

Posts: 571 Location: Williamstown, WV | Never had a problem withh only 10 baits. If you can't cover everything with 10-15 baits then in my book that's silly. But I do alot of what flyfisherman call "match the hatch (baitfish)" I usually stick with smaller baits (I fish west virginia streams, not canadian lakes)...our baitfish are suckers not ciscoes. Like I said when I stick with 10 baits I tend to keep one tied on for a longer period of time instead of changing baits every 20 minutes. I believe you have to give something a chance to work, I always wonder how the old timers did it, wonder if they had 100 baits and switched every 20 minutes like I have seen a 1000 people do. Just my preference. Shawn

Posts: 457 Location: Minneconia | I don't think Depthraiders, Tremors, or Topraiders would be considered "big" baits at all. Matt, you definitely need to add some sort of plastic and smaller bucktail/spinnerbait the mix. Edited by Dirt Esox 2/12/2007 3:27 PM

Ever been in any of the top guides boats? do they only have 10-15 baits along...do you think if they could get away with 10-15 baits they would ? of course...IMO 10-15 can probably do an ok job...but having more in a variety of sizes and colors will put more fish in the boat over the course of the season...

Posts: 5874 | I went out with GregM on a trip we won from an auction several years ago. I brought 6 baits with me. Gregger brought like 600. Two big Lakelands filled to the brim, and a large duffel bag filled with plano's of baits. Anyway, I had some action on a Suick. Greg finally put on a Yellow/Orange Bootail, and three casts later, he stuck a very nice Moen 43. The Bootail he put on? One of the 6 baits I brought! I'll take a couple Plano 3700's when I'm in another boat. In my own boat, I'll have a Plano hanger box full, and those same Plano 3700's. No way do I take all 200+ baits I am down to. Here's my thinking.. a few baits might catch you one or 2 fish on the day...most days, the fish change locations/activity level, etc throughout the day or even hour...that bait you caught that one fish on in the morning...well in the afternoon or evening they might want something completely different in a different color...If you are happy having a one or 2 fish day, take your 10 baits and have at it..again, IMO taking more baits than needed is better than not having enough as the day / conditions will probably change...having too many along is better than not having enough...just the way I see it...but what do I know... ![]()

Posts: 571 Location: Williamstown, WV | BN, I should have clarified this earlier...75 percent of my fishing is out of a 12 foot jon boat that i have to drag over a hill to put in and out. Welcome to West Virginia fishing! 200 baits in my boat is overkill. In my big boat 18 footer, I take 15 tops. and yes if I catch 2 fish in a day here I'm tickled. Where do you fish? I'm sure are waters and the circumstances surrounding our fishing are totally different. Shawn

Posts: 1462 Location: Davenport, IA | There are a lot of days where my box is never opened. Sometimes the fish are fairly predictable....but there are other days I'm glad I have around 100 baits with me. As for big baits and small baits...I definitely wouldn't want to be on a lake w/o both.

I have just one box with about 80 baits. So if I bring 10 or 80 it takes up the same amount of space. Just need to have a little self control (which gets tougher when the fishing gets tough) but each bait has a little something different I liked about it and that's why I purchased those lures in the first place. Who knows, those slight differences could save the day with a fish or two. Mike

Posts: 56 | I have to go with having as many baits along that you can get away with. I keep two Monster Lakewoods full in the boat that make wonderful deck extensions. They will handle just about anyone standing on them. In those I keep all of my surface baits, small to mid sized cranks in one and bigger cranks and Pounders in the other. I am surprised how few people are aware how durable those Monster Lakewoods are for standing on them. For my bucktails and Bulldawgs...I stuff them into a bunch of Plano 3700's and stack them into my livewell. But, don't forget to plug all of the water inlets and outlets so the baits don't get wet. This will save a lot of room in your boat. Baits like Dawgs and Cowgirls or any other baits similar can be damaged easily from one fish...so I like to keep plenty of replacements in the boat at all times. Then I can worry about fixing them later when I am off the water. Hope this helps, Lee Tauchen
