Posts: 5874 | Last time I tried this, it was way cold. Like 14 degrees. I might be in Lexington for some training on the 13-14th of March. Should I bring the boat, and stay a couple extra days?

Posts: 1061 Location: Medford, WI | Shep, glad you brought this post up. Just got a call from my fishing partner who goes to school down in La Crosse and the first thing he says to me is "Jake, when does the bite on Cave Run start?" So I'm also wondering the same thing; worth going to Cave Run for 3 college students who need to find water and muskies over spring break? I've only started to look for places to stay and other options for fishing, but I would very much appreciate any suggestions from anyone as to where three college students could go musky fishing March (14-17). Is there places to camp on/near Cave Run? Appreciate any help from anyone. Thanks guys, Jake Bucki

Posts: 2089 | Spring break muskies!!!!I'd go to Indiana and The Cave.Lots of fish in the aquarium(Webster) and the possibility of a cow there or on one of the other local ponds. The Cave can be awesome early with #'s as well as big fish.Make it a round trip.Last I checked, Spring Break was a week.Have Fun and Good luck! I have been fishing the Cave for about 5 years now. I have seen some great fishing down there in march. I have been guiding for both Tony Grant and Gregg thomas down there and have had numerous multiple fish days and some nice fish in the boat. my first time on the lake I saw a 40 pound class 52 incher caught right in front of me. And have been on the lake when two 53 inchers were caught on the same weekend. Usually there in march there are 4 or 5 muskies in the 50 inch class caught. And during pre fishing for the PMTT last april I witnessed a 50 incher was caught from the bank. on the first muskie first outing down there in march there was 63 fish caught on the cave up to 45 inches. Posts: 217 Location: ladysmith, wi | Myself and fishing partner are also thinking of going somewhere this march, was considering cave run, but know webster sounds good, does webster receive alot of pressure that time of yr, and does anyone know of any hotels close to the water maybe with docks so we dont have to pull the boat out everyday.

Also check out this post from the archives about a 53 incher out of the cave! funny that this is from the same guy who says that the cave isn't worth going to. http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=14... Tanner Wildes

Go to Cave Run in March!!!! I've Boated 26 Muskies in 23 days of fishing in three Marches on the Cave. 2004, 2005, 2006. On March 4, 2004 Justin Mullins and I had a double. Wow two muskies in the net at the same time. We fished 4 hours that day and caught 4 muskies! March is a great time to go to the Cave. Last year I got several nice fish in March! Crash's Landing has produced some awesome fish in March. Go to the Cave in March! I'll be there every chance I get. Carl M. Eisenhart

Tanner Wildes I didnt necessary say that the cave wouldent be worth it, but i meant that the cave can be tough and unpredictable in the spring due to weather, pressure and such. I still wouldent turn down a trip to the cave though! Tanner, seeing that you guide on both the cave and green river, which do you like the best in the spring? I have never been to green but i hear it fishes much like the cave in the spring cause it has more shallow flats. Good luck this spring Tanner! Edited by muskie_man 2/5/2007 6:51 PM

Posts: 54 Location: near the Cave | March is a decent time of year on the cave. Sometimes its cold and windy so as far as the camping goes...eh. There is small motel right on the lake, tackle shop next door. Ramp right across the highway(although not the best ramp) unless you are experienced in loading your boat in a tornado. Come on down, worst case scenario you end up at Green river.

Posts: 688 Location: Northern IL | This is pretty funny, one lake, webster, 5 little holes n 500 acres, it's like catching fish in a barrel! Then you have the Cave, big lake, well over 5000, maybe 8 I forget. The Cave can be a tough lake for the newbie, however a lot more can be learned. Then again if you have someone to show you around, They may make it sound like a piece of cake, it's not! The bottom line is if you have some knowledge you can pretty much catch a fish "anywhere", (I'd go to the cave, you will become better in the long run) but if a fish is a must have, then webster, Good luck! Where can you go fishing at in the US in March and have stable weather? March could be bad in KY or IN. If you want to fish in March then those two would be great options. You can't predict from one spring to the next or even year to year. Last year in feburary it was in the 50's in KY and right now it is 2 degrees outside. Also the water temp got into the high 40's low 50's in this month. The best thing to do is come to Cave Run and fish it for a day or two and if you have no luck go to IN on the way home.

Posts: 1061 Location: Medford, WI | DM, That's kind of what my friends and I were just talking about tonight; going down to Cave Run and if nothing is going for two days, then start our way back and fish in Indiana. And no...we didn't plan on any stable weather as you never know what you'll get that time of year. We also are strongly considering Kinkaid in Southern IL. Anyone have any comments/suggestions on that? It's a little less of a trip, but not too much (about 2 hours). Not sure how the pressure is there for that time of year. Also looking for any smaller lakes in either state that we could try if traffic is heavy at both places. Not sure if such places exist in KY or IN, but seems like there would be some. I would appreciate any help. Thanks for everyone who has put in their two cents. There are lots of arguments both ways, and that's a good thing; that way you get to hear the good and bad of both. -Jake Bucki

Location: Athens, Ohio | http://www.muskyroadrules.com/schools.htm Shep, get in on Tony's Road Rules school and you'll have a blast. If you don't want to take your boat down, let me know and I'll run you around the lake. Or, you can fish with somebody down there who can actually CATCH fish there (I recommend KYDave - triton1 on this site). Be good to see you back in Kentucky, m

Muskie Man, In the spring time I like fishing both the cave and green. Both have there times when they are hot and times when they are not. I like the cave because there is more structure to fish, green river has only a one part of the lake that has a high density of fish, whereas the cave has it all through the lake. in green there is also no weeds at all, where the cave has great weed flats. I like both lakes alot, don't know if I could pick one or the other, love them both. Tanner Wildes

Come down here to Cave Run and give it try. If that doesn't work go to IN on way back home. It's early March guys and it can unpredictable anywhere you go not just at Cave Run. Contact some of guide services and find out whats going on before you come and that could give you a heads up where to go. The main thing is your going fishing in early march. Get online and contact someone down here for info. Good luck and catch a big one hopefully out of Cave Run.

Posts: 1061 Location: Medford, WI | Thanks for the advice Justin, I believe that's what the early plans are for now. (Head to Cave Run and if nothing and no signs of anything, head north and fish somewhere) Do you have an email that I could possibly contact you at throughout March to see how the fishing is at that time? And as you mentioned, we aren't counting on any consistent weather anywhere we go. Thanks again everyone...keep the suggestions/opinions coming. -Jake Bucki

Posts: 5874 | I've fished the Cave before. Was there for the inaugural MF outing. Got some snow and cold, and the Bull's tinkle froze! Had a good time, big fish of the event was caught out of the boat I was in. Made lasting friends like Grant, mikie, and mauser. Never heard a peep out of Scott Jenkins after that outing! hehehe I may not have my trolling motor in time, so the bringing a boat may not be an option. mikie, I may want to hitch a Gambler ride!
