Have any of you guys had any big Pike on Bucktails? We all know how good they are for Muskie but what about Northerns?

Yes. It used to be a yearly thing for me, I would build bucktails for my friends that were on their way to Canada to fish pike. If I recall correctly, there were some in the low 40's that came in every year.
Wait to hear from them if they see this thread, but it's a definite yes.

I do very well on big Pike with bucktails, and a couple are Beavertails.

I do well with them in Lake Superior Bay for pike every spring. Yellow seems to work the best for me. I also get a few smallmouth bass on them occassionally.

Big Time Action! I fish for big pike in the early spring, before the musky opener. I key in on the shallow spawning bays with developing weed areas. One thing I experienced is if its a warm spring, bucktails are my number 1 presentation. My favorites are the Mepps Musky Killers and the six inch Figure Eights. If it's a cold spring, like we have experienced the last couple of seasons, try twitch'in a minnow bait like the six inch squirrly jake,an absolute killer on big pike! Kdawg

Several 40"+ Pike last season on Mille Lacs using XX's.Lost track of the 35-40's.Several even ate at night, which pike aren't "supposed" to do.Apparently, they , like muskies , can't read and don't watch videos. Steve

I do real well with bucktails, and spinnerbaits, for pike. I like browns and whiteor yellow. My biggest is 45" from LOTW on a white Ghostail. Mepps work pretty good too.

In a word...YES!!! My two largest pike were 45 and 48 some 20 years ago and both came on buaktails during the same week on a lake that begins with a "w". Like in wabigoon. I'm not specifically saying it "was" wabigoon" but it does start with a "w"........................................................................................................................................................just like wabigoon. I have yet to see the likes of another even close to the 45 at the end of one of my lines.

I hate to rain on this parade, but my success with bucktails has been limited. I do considerably better with a husky jerk, jig and plastics, shad rap, larger spoons (tipped of course).

I have used them, but seem to get more follows from big pike. I can have a follow, change up to something else and wham... Does not mean I have never caught them on a bucktail. They just do not top the list of go to pike lures for me.

I will try them again from time to time... Good luck on your trip!

All the best,
muskyboy

I have some monster pike on bucktails but by and large I do better with smaller sized lures, especially jigs and cranks

Although large pike will hit bucktails, I agree with others that spinner baits are a better choice for fishing for pike. I'd fish more spinner baits in a northern pike lake.

magnum bulldawgs seems to work really, really well on big pikes.
but I think that on this side of the pond (eu), pikes are a little different.

Nope, magnum bulldawgs work really, really well here too. I got my largest a 47" pike on a friends homemade version of a magnum bulldawg on my vacation to Canada. I would have been throwing a magnum bulldawg, but I had had them all ripped to shreds by that point in the week and didn't have any left. Good baits for pike, with the only drawback that pike tend to rip them up more than musky do. I'm taking many more to canada this year than I did last year.

I threw bucktails as well, the mepps marabou and the eagle tail mostly. I had one to the boat on an eagle tail that was an upper forty inch fish too, but couldn't get him in the cradle before he threw the bait. (That's all right, because I got a thirteen pound laker a few minutes later on the eagle tail.) I also did really well using a rad dog spinner bait. Those are pretty much all I threw for the most part, but I beat the heck out of my friends who were throwing mepps #5's mostly. Not a law, but that's just how the week worked out. The year before, #5's worked for everyone, but then again, I didn't have bulldawgs with me that year.

Go over the thread wraps in the off-season with either Shoo Goo or Crazy Glue. Small fish especially will wear out some wrappings pretty good. #5 Vibrax, #5 Musky Killers and some of the larger models all work. Tandem trebles, like on the two baits above can get deep, spreaders and cutters will help. Single hooks on spinnerbaits are nice in that respect. Slow and low in summer works great on bigger pike, early season bulging and stuff can be good in shallower water. Long casts and a steady, patient retrieve is good for working deeper in the summer, spinners of any kind are pretty tough to go wrong with on pike.
