Has any one used the new Shumway Giant Flasher? How does the giant flasher marabous fullness compare to say a triple xxx? Does anyone have any pics of this new bait? looks like it will be a good one!

muskie_man, give a look at the Dinner Bell. It is a dual huge blades/maraboo bucktail.

Look for this thread lower on this page titled "Musky Tackle Online....Ding! Ding! Ding!".

Troy has caught several good size muskies (over 45") on the Madison area lakes on his creation and I have one as well, but have not had a chance to try it out. Great looking bait, well made, and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

i think it's safe to assume that all the big marabou tails will have roughly the same action in the water - big blades pulling and poofing the big ties of marabou.
the new Shumway stuff looked good at the Chicago show.
i prefer the XX myself, but i'm admittedly biased.

there are significant size differences between the various baits, however.
here's the stats on the big double-10 marabous available that i know of:

the Mojo XX is 8", 3oz, two 7/0 hooks, .062 wire

the Dinner Bell is 11", 3oz, two 6/0 hooks, .051 wire

the Shumway Giant Flasher is 13", 3oz, two 5/0 hooks, .051 wire

the Mojo XXX is 15", 4oz, three 7/0 hooks, .062 wire

My reel of choice is the Abu Garcia 7001LH.

They are big, powerful, and durable. Actually these bucktail with the dual big blades don't pull as much as a single one. it seems that dual blades have a canceling effect.

I threw the Giant flasher several times in the pool at the Chicago show and went right over to Shumway's booth and forked over some US currency. I loved the action that I was able to get with a variety of retrieves. Now I do not own a XXX or even a XX or a dinner bell so I cant say I like it more or less in comparison.

The Sportsman in Appleton just got in the giant flashers and also the baby flashers. They also got in some more new titles of muskie dvds today and more baits to think about summer with.

The best way to decide on what reel to use on big bucktails is the gear ratio. These baits pull a ton of water on the retrieve thus a winch still reel is necessary. The abu garcia 7000 style C3 (silver color) has a 4 to 1 ratio, 7000hsn and big game reels have a faster ratio of 5 to 1. The gears in these reels are much larger and hold up better than smaller reels. They are also less expensive but heavier than calcuttas and lunas. I use a 7000hsn, my older 6500 2 speed reel which has a setting of 3.8 to 1 or my calcutta 400 with the new livebait handle which has a big one piece of rubber to grab! I can fish all day and will not get fatigued casting and retrieving these big double bladed bucktails with the slower ratio geared reels. On the other hand a faster ratio like the abu garcia C4 reels at 6.3 to 1 can make a day of fishing harder on the wrists and arms with the big stuff. They are designed for glide style jerkbaits (wood, plastic big baits). The faster ratio gears can also be torn up after a season of tossing the big bucktails. These bucktails can be burned easier with the slower ratio gears. Think about pulling a big boat out of the water with a truck. Do you throw the tranny in a lower gear or stay in a high overdrive gear??

I've used a Luna 300 from Daiwa for 1 1/2 seasons and throw big blades a LOT.You don't need a 7000, although it's a great reel for the applicaion. The Luna is 5.1:1 and is a workhorse.Have had 9 in rotation and nary a problem.I tried a 7000 for burning the big 10's this season and went back to the Luna. The 7000 made me crank much faster to get the same speed. So many options.
