Was just wondering what is going on with the stocking plans for these two lakes. I know there was a lot of push to get the MDNR to stcok the lakes.
I have not heard anything since the fall, I know there was a lot of people against stocking Gull. Has it been shot down???

I'm pretty sure that Pokegama was passed. The decision on Gull Lake hasn't been made and won't be made for about another 6 months. It looks promising for Gull. But we shall see.....

There's been a lot going on with these two lakes. We've been debating this topic in the DNR's Esox Round Table. Pike Inc is terrified that the muskies are going to dramatically effect the pike population and that *^&^$# from Sportsmen for Responsible Muskie Management is preying on their fears.

My gut feeling (short answer): Pokegama should go through this year.
Gull probably won't go this year.

The good thing to come out of this is that everyone on the round table is for having the MN DNR come up with a short and long term muskie management plan. This alone will get us new lakes in the future.

I think it's great all the work you guys are doing Treats. Pokegama already has a small musky population from the Mississippi, so it only makes sense to stock it since it's already a natural lake.

Let's keep our fingers crossed on Gull and see what happens.

A member of the DNR said final decisions haven't been made on those two lakes yet, but I tend to agree with Shawn. I know fish were stocked in the Mississippi River between Aitkin and Brainerd and this spring there will be catch and release only fishing in that stretch. I know Elk Lake is C&R only, but does anyone know if those are the only two bodies of water in MN with that designation? Thanks.

There is also a small population of muskies in Gull already. I've seen a few including one massive fish while bass fishing last summer. Hopefully this does go through as Gull would be an awesome muskie fishery. While they are at it the Whitefish Chain would also make a great candidate....Here's hopin'!

Sounds good! Gull would eventually take some of the pressure off the few lakes in the Brained area. Gull is also connected to a half dozen other lakes that would evenually have a fishable population. The Whitefish Chain would be a great fishery also but I think we are really dreaming with that thought.

I would love to see Pokegama get stocked and see more fishable numbers of muskies. The Mississippi river has provided a number of lakes in this region with quality muskies but not enough numbers that people would spend their time fishing for them. There are a lot of designated lakes in the Grand Rapids area and the growing population of musky anglers has increased dramatically and put a lot more pressure on these other lakes. Pokegama will provide some quality/trophy fish with a little TLC in a stocking program and relieve some of this pressure I've witnessed on these other lakes.

Good work to all that are involved in keeping the quality of our fisheries in the fore front!

Much appreciated!

I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with Many Point Lake north of Detroit Lakes, MN., but the Fargo-Moorhead Chapter will be putting over 500 Muskies into it for the next 5 years. It's quite an expense, but we think it's worth it. We'll have a NEW Muskie lake to fish in a few years.

Brad,

That's awesome news with Many Point! The information I have shows that 489 fingerlings and 77 adults were put in there in 2006, I'm assuming in the fall. Nice work on getting that one to go through. Hopefully that one gets the ball rolling on the others we're looking at.

It was 566 total fish, but I never did get all the actual details on size. I know a 12 pound and 18 pound fish were both stocked, as they had been missed in previous nettings. I wonder if anyone thinks they're a good enough stick to go after two legal Muskies in an entire lake? Ha ha.

I sure hope that both lakes will get stocked. With the smelt population in Pokeg, there should be some real monsters in there.

Has anyone heard about the proposal to stock the Horseshoe Chain near St. Cloud? I saw a breif mention of it in Outdoor News a month or so ago. That would be awesome to have a muskie lake close to St. Cloud.

That would be excellent to get 2 more big (relatively speaking) lakes stocked with muskies!
I have to applaud Shawn for having the patience to work with the DNR on this issue. However, what is with the name calling? Is that really productive and does it present a good image of the Twin Cities chapter?
