| Have any of you tried Musky fishing in Missouri? We are considering a trip to Pomme De Terre. When do you guys think would be the best time? Any guides in that area that we should consider? |

| Having grown up in St. Louis, and having spent a zillion fun hours in the Ozarks, I'm always interested in anything Missouri. My suggestion is to contact the DNR to determine lakes with muskie potential. Where are you from in MO? |

| Normally the best time to fish Pomme de Terre is late August through the first couple of weeks in October. A lot of people fishing Pomme will catch muskies while fishing for bass. I believe this is more true in spring than any other time of the year.
However, I'm really looking forward to this spring as there should be a good number of muskies in the mid to upper 30" with several low / mid 40", and perhaps some upper 40" fish.
I plan to fish harder this spring knowing the fish population is looking up from past years.
April or May would probably be the best spring months. A lot will depend on the weather, lake level, etc.
www.missourimuskies.org is the Pomme de Terre chapter of Muskie Inc. Although I'm not a member, you may want to contact one of their members for information and advice. They have a section for "caught 2006" will might help. Of course, this is only their chapter.
As soon as the weather breaks with a nice warming trend I'll be heading there. That will probably be the last of Feb or the first of March.

Location: Corning, Iowa | Contact any of the members. Carl Marks guides. I've fised with him. Good guy, and knows the lake. They have Guide for a day. You bring your pole, and what ever, and they furnish the boat, and guild. You meet people, and learn the lake. If your interested, sigh up early. Good luck Doug |

Location: WI | Lived down there for a year, Pomme De Terre sucks unless its numbers your after, the size structure blows, granted I only lived there a short time but I saw enough in that time to know its not a lake I would hit again. We did have some very nice fish come around in Hazel Creek Lake that would definatly be my choice if determined to hit Missouri.
rpieske would probably be the guy to talk to for down there. |

| I've already fished hazel creek nice lake, just have a friend who lives close to Pomme and we were thinking maybe a little turkey hunting and musky catching would make for a great weekend. But after that last response maybe not. |

| If I remember correctly, you can not hunt turkey after 1pm. So, you may want to do some kind of fishing in the afternoon. While the muskies are usually less than 40", the number and growth seems to be increasing. I think the Missouri Conservation Department started stocking
muskies from Ohio, which are probably more suitable for Missouri. Not sure about this, but last spring my brother-in-law caught the fattest 40" muskie I've ever seen....(period). Unfortunately we never measured the girth.
Anyway, I really feel the muskie population and growth (size) continues to improve. And, last year's fish should be 2 to 3 inches longer this year with the fast growing season.
Another lake, just north of Springfield called Fellows Lake might be worth trying. Although I've never fished it, as it is limited to 40hp, it's been getting a lot of attention lately. I believe the lake was stocked in the mid 90's and the muskie growth and population has done well with a few fish in the upper 40 inches.
You may want to check with the Missouri Conservation Department http://mdc.mo.gov/
about Fellows Lake and Pomme de Terre. You may want to try to contact the guy who is head of the Muskie Fishery in Missouri. I would think you could get his name/email, etc from the above internet site or emailing the department.
Oh well, good luck on your turkey hunting......lot's of them in Missouri. |
