Posts: 223 Location: Downers Grove, IL | Guys and Gals, My buddy and I spent the time making the rounds at the Tri-Esox Show as well as the All Canada Show today. We've narrowed down our list for our maiden musky voyage to Canada this summer but are having problems committing! The plan is for a week long trip in mid-late july, early august. We don't have a boat so going to a camp that has nice ones fully outfitted (trolling motor/decent size outboard) is key. Here's what we've narrowed our list down to: Duck Bay Lodge - Sabaskong/LOTW: accomodations and boats (not bringing our own) look to be top notch and I've heard nothing but great things about Sab Bay for both action and a chance at a trophy. What concerns me is that this place appears "too nice". I'm afraid that we'll be missing out on camaraderie with other fisherman (esp. musky fisherman) and be amongst people looking to just get "away" to a beautiful, well maintained location and not "into" serious fishing. Am I wrong? Any pros/cons of being on an island vs. the mainland other than the remoteness vs. easy access to food, booze, etc? Rough Rock Lodge - Winnipeg R. System comes highly recommended from a friend of mine who guides quite successfully on mille lacs. however, i'm my concerns are that: 1) it's an extra 100 miles north 2) for my first trip, (and who knows when the next will come) would I regret driving by LOTW or Eagle 3) except from my buddy, I haven't heard anything about the musky fishing up here. Andy Myers Lodge - Eagle Lake I've read a MILLION positive reviews on AML and know that Mr. Herbeck runs a top notch camp that caters to the musky fisherman - that's a big draw for me - camaraderie and a bunch of hard core fisherman sharing info over beers in a camp that's ALL ABOUT fishing. What concerns me is that I've heard on multiple occasions that Eagle is a tough nut to crack - especially for a first timer. Is it that hard? Even after spending a day or two with a guide? I want a 40# as much as the next guy, but I need some somewhat consistent action in the meantime. Is Eagle that harder to crack than the dark waters of LOTW? That's our three...(although I'm open for any suggestions). Thanks in advance for your advice! Jeff

Posts: 484 Location: St. Louis, MO., Marco Is., FL, Nestor Falls, ON | Jeff: I can speak to Duck Bay Lodge. I have a friend that stays there every year. It is a well run lodge right in the heart of some of the best muskie fishing on LOTW. Boats are good. You can catch many, many muskies within 5 miles of the camp. Some really big fish out there. Give me a shout out if you head up that way. I fish that area all the time. Maybe I can help you get oriented.

While you may think or hear that Eagle Lake is hard fishing, on the contrary I took my 14 year old to Eagle last summer for his first ever Musky Hunt . I cannot tell you enough that this body of water may be the best Musky water in N.A. ! In one week of fishing we boated 4 and realistically should have had 9 in the boat with a little luck. Missed 2 at boatside and had 2 get off but thats Musky fishing, also had a huge knee shaker following a topwater but could not get her to go. 2 fellas that were at camp the same week boated 11 only 1 was under 40". We were rookies to Eagle Lake and I think we did a pretty good job. Eagle can be a little intimidating at first (the sheer size of the water). But like Mr. Donnie Hunt writes in his Musky Hunter magazine article its all about a positive mindset !!! I think thats true on any body of Musky waters. While i cannot comment on the afformentioned resorts i can say we stayed at Century Lodge and I believe my son and i have found a life long Musky destination !! ( God willing) We are going back this summer with that little bit of experience to grow on this time around.
