I'm one day from leaving for the flatlands for the beginning of my second musky show season. Last year, fresh off my "Identifying a MuskierFirster" post, I wandered into that small college basement a quivering, nervous blob of a middle aged man with a stuffed wallet and a temporary third hand growing out my back to help carry the plethora of purchases I expected to be making. I did not personally know any of the musky enthusiasts that haunt this and other musky forums. I rolled north on the tollway out of Illinois on Sunday morning with a bag of Weagles, a gross of brightly colored hand made gliders (most of which have never seen the water), a medicine ball sized clump of Bull Dawgs, a pesky headache from my indulgence at the protracted swap meet, new acquaintences, and only a slight inkling of what a great season I had in store for me.

I head to Harper College tomorrow with just two hands and a much thinner wallet. I'm delighted the lengthy belt that encircles my prodigous waist has four notches on the trolling/sucker bite side of the buckle, even though the casting side remains frustratingly unmarked. It is a comfort knowing that identifying a MuskieFirster will be an easy and pleasing task due to the number of cool people I met over the course of the last twelve months. I won't have to wander silently and aimlessly up and down the isles, lonely and timid, buying baits just to experience some simple human contact. My end of any musky based conversation can be held up with, if not expert knowledge, at least some experience and a couple of interesting stories.

I expect to make a few modest purchases over the course of the next couple days; perhaps stick jackets, a Rumbler, several molten slices of Deep Dish Pizza, a soggy, spicey Italian Beef, or a perfectly garnished hot dog. Until I learn to effectively work a good portion of the baits I purchased last year, I see no need to again pack the trunk of my car so tightly sparks shower unfortunate drivers behind me all the way back to Wisconsin. I look forward to talking to everyone, hearing your plans and dreams for the upcoming season, sharing a few of my own, and maybe solidifying a few others.

I'm confident the swap meet will be the highlight of the weekend. Why shouldn't it be? Everyone will be in same place at the same time, AND they sell beer. I'm excited.

So who's with me? Let's all Go, Go, Go, to the Show, Show, Show.

Kevin

this is a very smart plan.
of course, it's hard to stop yourself when the sparklies are right in front of you...

also, Stick Jackets are awesome.

Looking forward to seeing you all there. Although, I can't make it to the swap, I'll have a few at Fox and Hounds after Friday's binge is over.

Kevin, I'll listen to all the stories you can tell. If you see a tall skinny dude, with a slight grin on his face as he walks in. Smack me so I don't buy lots of unnecessary "tools". Okay, don't smack me. Just laugh as I cringe at what the wife is going to say on Saturday.

Kevin,

I'll be in your shoes this saturday as its my first trip to this Chicago Musky Show. Fortunately I have a VERY limited budget, and I also have plenty of baits which I have not thrown or learned. So for this show I will be removing a vast majority of the Christmas money I aquired and leaving it at home!

How much are the stick jackets?

I'll "smack" you Joel...I owe you one of those. I'll be getting there around 5PM. It should be easy for me to find Joel, us tall guys can make eye contact with each other pretty easily in a big crowd. Kevin, what will be the best way to find you? I was thinking of bringing one of those Italian beef sandwiches in so that your nose will lead you to me. If you see me before I see you, just yell out...Ding, ding, ding. I already know where to find the Packer Stadium guy, hopefully there is still a giant Weagle with my name on it.

I am hoping to be in Giant Weagle heaven when I leave. Does Fox and Hounds have real Chicago pizza?? I need to have real Chicago pizza after the show.

Well my bags are packed,
I'm ready to go,
It's time to leave for the big Musky Show,
I'll stop real quick to kiss
my Wiiifffe goodbye.

I'm leeeeaaaaving for the big show,
I hope to see you all and say hello.

Imagine me singing that to "I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane."

Brings tears to your eyes, doesn't it? In more ways than one.

Kevin

I hope I make it without that oil change I should stop and get.

The Extreme One, DaveJ, and me are coming down on Sunday. We know we're not going to have any baits to choose from, cuz they'll all be gone tonight!

But, I'll bet there are a few hangovers we can take advantage of! See you Sunday!
