take the lure out beside the boat ? I bought a planer board a few years , never used it , but now i'm getting the itch to use it. Do lures that pull quite easily do better than those that dig ? Do bucktails work OK ? Thanks MD

It depands on how hard the lure pulls, and your speed. A bucktail or spinner bait won't pull as hard as a deep diving, big crankbait. The offshore boards do not have the adjustable weight like the Mr Walleye/Church boards, so they tend to keep the angled front up and out of the water. The Church boards have a weight that you can slide forward, and it will keep the front down in the water, and will help to get them farther out from the boat. This also tends to make them submarine more, and when the Church boards submarine, you have a real tussle getting them back up.

I prefer the Off Shore boards, for several reasons. I don't really care that the bait doesn't go way out to the side, as I don't think muskies shy away from the boat like walleyes do. I catch too many fish on shortlines, with the bait running right next to the boat, maybe 4 feet down, to worry about how far the board can get out..

I also use the Off Shore boards, they are much easier to see in rough water. The nose up profile is an advantage in my opinion.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Terry,

I'm not saying it is an advantage or disadvantage. To me, it doesn't matter, as I don't use the boards while muskie fishing for the same reason I do for walleye fishing.

I'd use either, but I hate the submarining of the Church boards. In fact, at one time I had 6 Church boards, and 18 offshore boards in the boat. Too many, so I sold the Church boards.

I cant stand small boards. I run 31 inch twin ski boards. Use downrigger releases on rings. I build custom boards and have them running from coast to coast. We got musky yesterday on Austin Lake in Michigan running my boards running short lines with Jointed Lokes and Slashers. Check them out at http://www.fishall-lures.com/planer.html Kingfisher

Reef Hawg,

I have 6 with OR16 releases, 6 with OR16's and Tattle flage, and 6 with Snapper releases. The first 6 I use for Muskies, and the other 12 I'll use for eyes, and spares. Sold my 6 Church boards, so at one time I had 24 boards. hehehe
