Right now I do screw eyes after the clearcoat, but I am considering putting them in before.

My reasoning is I think it adds to the integrity of the finish. Even with epoxied screw eyes, there is always a chance you have a small gap where water can get under the surface of the clearcoat.

If clearcoat is put on last you can be sure that you covered all the gaps.

Screw eyes would still be epoxied in for added strength.

The only con I can think of is you dont get quite the nice finished look. I personally prefer durability over looks, but...

Any thoughts?

Put them in before clearcoat, makes them harder to pull out plus makes for a better seal.

I put them in before clearcoat and drill them out, then I pray that the customer has enough sense NOT to try to tighten them.Beav

No question, before the clear coats. Better seal and strength. Kingfisher

I put them after and glue them by epoxy. Never had any problems.

never had an issue either way. the feeling the lure wont let water in is false. water will penetrate a trolling bait. the secret is the beginning. use a proper sealer before primer.. after a couple rock hits or musky teeth shows the tale.

Good sealer is a must, but I still put them in before clearcoat as I prefer integrity to looks.

I put one coat on (let it dry) then redrill out the holes and glue my screw eyes in and then apply the rest of my epoxy coatings. Seems to work very well. I also have foudn that if I do this I have less tendency to screw up my paint job as I already have one coat of epoxy on when I am putting my screw eyes in wiht my drill.

The only time that I didn't put the screw eyes in before the clear coats was when I repainted some Wabulls for a guy and I had to use cup washers for the hooks on the belly. I put on one coat, and before putting on the second, I put in the screw eye and washer.

Seal, epoxy in the screweyes and epoxy over all. The epoxy coats over the screweye mounting epoxy really makes a nice looking bait.
