Looking to buy a new auger...
Strikemaster or Jiffy?
10" or 8" ?

whudddya think and why?
I'm leaning toward Strikemaster Laser Mag.
Mostly tipup fishing.

Definitely 10" - Once had a pike on the Mississippi that I couldn't fit through a 8" hole- straightened the hook trying to pull her up the hole ( ~18" of ice & no gaff) .

Have fun!

Nothing against 10" augers but I have to stay with 8" ones so my grand-daughters don't fall through the hole!!!!

I have a Strikemaster Lazer Mag. My friends have different augers. By the end of the day, they are using my auger to drill holes. So, I've seen several votes for the Strikemaster. I'd concur with them.

I have a 3 horse Jiffy that is about 8 years old. Starts great and cuts pretty well, but sure is heavy. If I was in the market for a new auger I would really look into the 2 horse Strikemasters. Much lighter, and from what I have seen on the ice, they seem to cut at least as well as my old Jiffy, if not better. I hear the new jiffy blades are pretty good as well though... Really couldn't go wrong either way.

If you go with the 10" make sure to check out the three horse models. We have had a bunch of the smaller motors come back into the store with stripped out gears. On one trip to film the "We Live Outdoors" show in canada, three of the smaller motors decided to get dentures instead of teeth on the gears.

If you are having trouble deciding between 8 and 10", why not get a 9". As a die hard pike guy, and shallow water panfisherman, I like my 10" holes, but am looking to get a lighter unit with a 2hp and a 9" might just fit the bill. Check out the Nils Master augers some time. They are very expensive, but so far advanced compared to the american augers. I beleive they are Swedish.

I have a 9" Jiffy 2HP Legend Lightning. Starts the first time, every time. Has plenty of power, cuts fast, and is light enough.

No matter what auger you get, use the synthetic, smokeless oil. They start and run way better.

Did Jiffy update the cutting tip on the 2hp 9" models from a few years ago. I have a few friends with the Lightnin's and they do not cut well at the bottom of the hole at all. They need to be picked up and feathered constantly, and cause alot of torque on the arms in the process. Just wondering if any improvements have been made in this regard, as it has been my only hangup from going from my current heavyweight but steady, 3HP.

Mine does hang up a bit, just before breaking through completely. I don't feather it, but I do relieve some of the downward weight when I get close. I don't know if the Stealth Blades affect this or not. I tend to think it is just a HP thing, afterall, the 3HP does have 50% more than the 2HP. You probably ice fish and drill a lot more holes than I, so this is probably a bigger annoyance to you.

But, I know fellas with other brand augers that do not hang up at all, though they are 8" and not 9. It could be a gear ratio thing too, or blade angle. They are not running stealth blades on theirs. I was wondering if the stealth would help at all. I am guessing yours is not as bad, as the ones they have are very annoying, to the point that both are planning to try something else or look for a blade change or modification. I have heard alot of good about the lightweight Nils, but they are a bit pricier than I want to experiment with. Till then, I will stick to my WI made Jiffy.
