Is this the direction the musky tackle industry is going? I've just observed in the R/H musky shop on-line catalog the new St. croix model PMXXXHF 7'9". This rod is rated for 8-20 ounce baits and 65-100 pound test! I have a relative that lives near the gulf of Mexico and he does'nt even use tackle that heavy! I wonder what Tony Rizzo thinks about this current trend. In his book, Secrets of a Muskie Guide, in the personal thought chapter, Tony already spoke about musky fisherman using heavy tackle. I know that it was over 30 years ago. Lines over 100lb test? For me personally, I also just roll with the changes. This is why I've gone to the bigger reels. Of course other rod manufacturers will have to respond to St. croix. Is there no end in sight? Remember most muskies taken are in the 30" to 40" range. Going against the grain may be my strategy for next year. Light tackle and small baits. Kdawg

I think that PMXXXHF 7'9" was designed for the increasing demand for a rod that could handle "Pounder" bulldawgs. Pat

The bigger baits get, the heavier equipment we're going to need to throw them...

It's a misconception that the line, rod, reel, etc. are built the way they are because of the fish, they're build that way because we're trying to cast stuff that the last generation of musky anglers would have laughed at.

Yep, designed to throw the big heavy swimbaits that we are seeing. I have tried a buddy's and it does the job very well. Much easier on the equipment.

Sounds like a deep jigging stick for grouper, etc. And with the advent of superlines, no one even bats an eye at someone using 100 lb line. Yet the reel mfr's still can't design a reel that will CONSISTENTLY hold up to casting big baits all day. Look how many of us still (ab)use 5000/6000 series Abu's (which were designed for 12-15 lb line) to throw massive baits on 80-130 lb braid.
