After having my compartments freeze shut up at PI, I bought a can of spray de-icer. So far, it seems to have worked on the Tuffy....but it made me think: could a few sprays of the stuff keep reels and rod guides from freezing?

The main ingrediant is METHANOL, and I'm wondering if it will possibly ruin parts or cause other damage. It does say it shouldnt get on open skin, but with the weather the way it is, there wont be any exposed skin regardless.

A product called Sil Glyde, used for auto door seals and available at most auto supply stores, is an excellent product for keeping the rubber gaskets from freezing (works good on your car door seals too). Where carpeted edges touch, scotch gard, spayed liberaly on both surfaces, works well. Never found anything that worked to well on rods and reel when it gets real cold.

WD-40 or PAM works on guides. I use it during the winter while fishing for Steelhead. Pat

I use it sparingly on my guides and reels. Works good and hasn't caused any problems yet. It also helps when your trolling motor is frozen.

hey Slamer,i would not use methanol if you have rubber seals or soft plastic. IT WILL EAT IT!!! i manage a office for a oil company and deal with methanol weekly. just speaking from what i have seen.

one more thing, you dont want the stuff on your skin,it will show up later in life. i took a class on that.

Thanks Missouri! I'll definitely hold off on using it on my rods/reels.
