hey all -
Looking for some ideas for kids fishing event coming up. It's not actual fishing but more or less a variety of things we could do with kids that will show up. All I have right now is a casting contest, fish id'ing. Any idea would be great. I really don't have a lot of info on what is going on or what is expected from us. It's not muskie related but fishing in general.

Thanks for the help.

If you have a baitshop near, do minnow races. The track is easy to build, and you can use crappie minnows. Small stuffed animals and treats with velcro strips on them in a bin, a fishing rod with the opposite velcro strip on a casting plug, and the kids get a chance to 'catch' a prize.

Practice casting plugs can be purchased at most sport shops.

For our M.I. kids night we have them make there own neckleses with fishing line, beeds, blades and anything else you can think of that would work.

for an educational idea besides id'ing fish...you could get the state's fishing guide lines booklet and go through it about regulations. Have a quiz and prizes.

Buy some suckers and a kids swimming pool.....starve the suckers and get the kids some night crawlers on ice fishing rods or ultra lites and let them try and catch them.

Contact your local DNR and see if they will do a fish shocking demo on a local stream or lake. m

Doubt they would do a shocking demo. Its not something they do just to do. Plus the info gathering part of the season is just about over.

Make the Kid's casting fun + competitive. Using white spray paint draw a series of 8 to 10 - 4 foot circles at various distances from the casting stations (5 casting stations). Place a wooden mouse trap randomly in each circle. Color code the traps based on distance. Do a 15 minute rotation, each contestant gets 15 minutes to catch as many traps as possible. Then have prizes based on the trap color/distance + a grand slam prize for anyone who gets all the traps. Make sure you have assistants/instructors on hand to offer personal hand's on help for each participant and to reset traps.

Another even easier one is to use colore coded 5 gallon buckets- hit the bucket win a prize-hit all the buckets win the grand slam.

Don't just limit it to casting & fish species ID. What about knot tying, aquatic plants, invasive species and even how to read lake maps. You might also ask the local DNR Warden to do a fishing presentation. You could also have mini seminar's on specific species of fish, i.e., done by members of the club who have experience chasing other species. You'll be surprised by the level of interest that 6-12 year olds have in regards to all aspects of fishing.

As for what to tie on the line- how about a daredevil less hooks. That's what my grand kids all learned to cast. Lead weight's are fine but they lack the visibility factor that kids need.

Have fun!
Al

Thanks everyone for the ideas. Some great ones. This is something that a local GM and US Sportsman Alliance are doing and happend to ask one of our members if we would want to help with the fish part. It's a hunting, fishing, outdoor thing this weekend. Short notice but still worth doing. Most of the ideas we won't be able to do at this event but it does give me some great ideas for the future when we have more time to plan things out. Brad - we have you racking leaves at the event this weekend! I'll give you the details at the meeting tonight!! LOL
