I have heard that on some of the new trophy lakes, they may not be getting any significant natural reproduction and am curious as to what the findings are on MN reproduction and what will be the future plan if they do not reproduce naturally?

What lakes do you mean?

Vermillion has about 30-50% natural reproduction

Mille Lac is a big unknown right now. The DNR is in the middle of a study to see if there is natural reproduction on the lake. We all know there is, but they'll hopefully be able to tell approximately how much.

Tonka and the metro lakes are around 5-10% natural fish from the sources in the DNR I've talked to.

I would say that 30-50% natural reproduction in Vermilion from fish stocked outside their "native range" shows that it can and does work very well.

Can you imagine musky's in Rainy? It would be Heaven!!!! It would probly only take a handful of years of solid stocking before they were self sustaining.

30-50% natural reproduction on Vermilion may be high. Alot of the fish have fins that have regenerated and unless you look really close or better yet feel the fins it is sometimes hard to tell especially on the bigger fish.

Questions then,

Is this enough to sustain a fishery?

Are they going to let these lakes basically carry on with natural reproduction as it occurs or continue stocking?

BTW, no point of view here just interested in what the future might hold over there.

They're still planning on stocking the lakes at this time. If the research shows that there's some good reproduction going on they may taper off the amount they stock. This way they can maintain a sustainable natural balance.

Can you elaborate on what you know about the DNR's Tonka estimate? Is there any thing we musky folks can do to promote and improve the natural recruitment?

That estimate came from Rod Ramsell (Larry's cousin).

There's not much we can do. The problem is vegetation and substraight. Things just aren't right for muskies to do well on that lake.

It seems to me that millfoil and muskie reproduction just don't mix well.

If Tonka is getting natural reproduction at the 5-10% of the population level? Is that correct? If they are getting reproduction I doubt it is the substrate or vegetation. I would think more likely it would be bass predation.

Actually sunfish predation is WAY more harmful to fry of all species then bass. All those mouths to feed and they feed on anything that moves.

I still think that the lack of sucessful reproduction has more to due to the environment. We've looked though the mounds of millfoil the weed machines have picked up and we've yet to see any musky fry. You see all other types of fish, but no muskies (when I've looked anyway).
