Posts: 20248 Location: oswego, il | Hey everybody, I just thought I would share a bad experience with sucker bobbers. I lost a fish on a hookset because the line broke at the bobber. I was using a unique one with a snap and a spring loaded clamp but the shaft had threads on it. I have used it numerous times without an issue but i guess it only takes one time. Hopefully the fish was able to spit the sucker as the line broke before I ever put any real pressure on the fish. I suspect the same thing could happen to bobbers that attach at both ends like the old styles we grew up with. From now on I will only use the ones with bobber stops. Lesson learned the hard way. ![]()

My buddy turned me on to these. They adjust in a snap and provide little resistance on the hook set. Or you can use the slip bobber type but I would recommend cutting the plastic insert out and using the pensile trick.

You can blow em up to the match the size of the sucker, they work just like a slip bobber. Darrell D has more experience with em. This is my first season using them, and they have been working great!

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | I don't use huge huge suckers. 14-15" max. Because of this, I don't need a huge huge float either. I run the Thill 8" slip float. Works great, little resistance and holds bait decently, even with 1.5oz of sinkers. This float will not work for big suckers...16-20". Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Posts: 5874 | Training wheels! Who needs them? hehehe I like to run my suckers straight down(read VERTICLE) to the side of the boat. One in front, about 3-6' down, and one out the back, and deeper. It's fun to Reef Hawg in a fish, and see it crush that sucker dangling there!

Posts: 8831 | Magruter is right -- buy a bag of the small (water balloon sized) balloons. They're cheap, you can control how buoant they are, it's no big deal if you lose them. And you get to pick what color they are!

Location: Des Moines IA | When tying the knot of the balloon, tie it around your line. Instant slip bobber. I was with cpr fish the first time I saw that, worked great. Edited by MuskieMike 10/17/2006 10:48 AM

Posts: 8831 | You kave to make the knot tight enough where the rubber grabs the line, but not so tight where you can't pull the line through it if you need to adjust your depth. And if you DO tie it so tight where you can't slide it anymore? *pop*

Location: Des Moines IA | It doesn't slide unless you pull on it, How? I don't know, but it works .......

Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | Just tighten it up by pulling the knot tighter around the line. On mono line it will slip, but will be tight enough to go under if you have a take. On super line, you can make it so tight it won't slip. Just crank it in and when the balloon hits the tip top, it will either slip or the super line will cut the balloon, Great for deep water as you never have to worry about taking the float off when you are fighting a fish. I have use this for fishing shiners to bass and pike. Also the "floats" don't take up much room and are easily adjusted for the size bait you are using.

Posts: 194 | I second (or third or fourth) the balloon float idea. I used 'em on bass down in Florida once. I've been trying it out with Suckers up here and it works great. The reason the ballon holds on the line is called "Friction."

I am going to try the balloon idea. that sounds like the answer to me. I cant stand the traditional big bobber. One hookset and the thing is messed up. The bobber with the pencil is a better idea but i have had them work loose sometimes (maybe my fault).
