I braved some nasty winds on Pewaukee Saturday along with a new musky fishing friend, Mike Z., who I met on this board. I had a hit on a sucker on our first drift, but missed it due to my inexperience with sucker fishing. I was actually taken a bit by surprise as we had just set up our drift and I had just completed putting out both suckers when the hit occurred. I got back a partially chewed up sucker for my trouble. Unfortuantely due to the high winds we were limited to working the leeward shoreline the rest of the morning and never saw another fish. I'm now 1 for 3 on sucker hits this year and really feel like I screwed up the two hooksets that I missed. I'm still trying to find a sucker rig that I'm totally comfortable with. I'll probably be out again this weekend on one of the local lakes soaking a couple of suckers and casting a lure.

Another tough weekend. Pretty discouraged lately. Only been seeing fish in MN when the weather was nasty. I thought twice about going this weekend but I know I'll be sorry in few months if I don't. What's the deal? Fished steep edges, weed edges, rocks, open water, and shallow with NOTHING. Only a few more chances before the ice comes...

Was tough in Oneida County for us.

We managed a 40 incher on a sucker and a 37 on a bulldawg. Had one hit on a suick and two on suckers with no hooks. Only one 30 incher followed.....tough..tough..tough...

Definately was lake dependent...as one lake gave up the fish....others tried were dead.....

I did fairly well in Indiana on Lake Webter. I got a 40 my grandpa got a 38 and my dad got a 37. That was during two days, there seemed to be a window from 11:00 to 12:00.

Numerous 50+ inch fish are being caught on Suckers in West-Central Minnesota. The only bad thing is that none are being caught by me. One member of my Chapter of Muskies Inc. had never caught a 50" fish before, and I heard he caught two last week, a 50" and a 51". The members of the Fargo-Moorhead Chapter of Muskies Inc. caught 25 Muskies at 50 inches or better last year, and from what I hear, they'll easily beat that this year.

When is my turn?

Maybe I'll have to wait till next year. Later.

Mille Lacs was mighty rough Saturday with waves crashing over the bow of the boat all day but I managed a 39 trolling a Magnum Bull Dawg and yesterday I had a big gal near 50 inches follow my Magnum Bull Dawg right up to the boat deep but not hit. Ran into the Dude and his buddies for dinner Saturday which featured hotties in Halloween costumes and Jonesi singing at some point

so so weekend for wife and I. She missed as really good one right off, then we ended the day with 3 muskies and a good pike. Brother got his first fish of the year sat before we met to go over to the packer game. Slow overall for hours spent.

Painful day in SE Wisconsin, my buddy lost an upper 30's right off the bat. He also cracked his rod on the hookset. I caught a 28" pike on a hellhound, it had all but 1 hook burried in his mouth and I managed to bury the last hook in the palm of my hand. Needless to say we remove myself before the fish, I did leave a nice chum line of blood in the water. If that wasnt bad enough I lost my personel best of about 46" + and close to 30lbs on a sucker(WHAT A FAT PIGGY).
I am 0 for 3 on suckers this year using a Mania lift off rig, at least I have been lucky enough to see all 3 fish before they rolled over, flipped me the fin, and spit out my sucker.
Ended the day with another nice pike on the hellhound and called it quits. I would do it all over with 3 hooks in the hand to post a picture holding that fish, I will be out for some payback next weekend.

Tight lines, John

Long report but worth it in the end....

I did the river/fish from shore thing this weekend. Went out Saturday with a lawn chair and three suckers. The plan was to sit on shore, have lunch, start a fire, read a book, and wait for suckers to get eaten. I got bored with that after two hours so I strapped on the hip waders and started casting. I waded across the river to an island, got on shore and started to cast from land. The river is gin clear right now and I see a musky coming hot after the Bobbie Bait I was throwing and then peel off - no way to make a figure 8 in this spot. At this point I realize I didn’t bring my release stuff or any other lures (they are all by shore) so I begin casting back with the same bait. Four casts later the musky is back and hot - grabs the lure with its head out of the water in about 5 inches of water and immediately starts thrashing. I jump in the water, grab the fish and try to pull the hooks out with my hands……….until the hook gets caught in my neoprene gloves. Now I am hooked to the lure which is hooked to the musky. I literally yell "stupid, stupid, stupid" at myself and take the glove off. I get the lure off the fish and get it back in the water right away but the fish is not moving. I can't revive it so I move the fish into current since its mouth is open and I can get current going through the gills. No luck so I decide I am just going to release the fish and sit here in the water till either I am sure it dies or it swims off. The minute I take my hands off the fish it takes off. 37" fish.

On Sunday, I try a different river but this time I am just casting. River is completely different - stained water, very dark with lots of boulders. I am actually crawling from rock to rock to fish. I am casting the same Bobbie Bait from the day before and I see a fish chasing the lure. Looks like a small (sub 20") fish as I can see something that I think is the tail right behind the lure. As the fish gets closer I realize it's a decent size musky upper 30s/low 40s and what I thought was the tail was a scar on its back. I try an "L" since there are two many rocks to do a figure 8. Fish misses the lure and swims away. I cast back to the same spot with the same bait and back comes the fish. This time the fish hits the lure and I set the hook but lure comes flying out of the fish's mouth - no hooks. I cast a 3rd time and the fish comes back again but not as hot so I figure the fish has lost its enthusiasm. I decide that I am going to switch lures and try casting to the fish from a different direction (AKA switch rocks). I put on a Shallow Dawg and I start climbing to a different rock pile to cast from. As I get close to my spot, I slip, fall in the water up to my neck, and break my St. Croix rod in half. I am 3/4 of a mile from my car and now I am starting to worry about hypothermia. I make my way to the car without incident but my knee is killing me yet today. I called St. Croix and Premier rods bought before 2005 only have a 2-year warranty so I need to get a new rod.

Banged up knee, lost a $120 fishing rod, almost caught hypothermia. Going back up again this weekend to get that fish. Musky fishing.

Saturday I had the rare oppurtunity to witness first hand a feeding window.I caught 4 muskies and missed another between 1 and 2 pm.I even managed 2 fish in 2 casts, one after the other! That made my day!The only downfall was the muskies were small,36 was the biggest. The lures of choice were a 8" Jake walleye pattern and a large Crane, walleye pattern. All fish were shallow.Sunday, was a typical day.Snaged a Bulldawg in deep water, broke the top hook off, don't ask me how...Broke an eyelette on the muskie rod,no fish seen.Got a 25" pike.Paul

I guided a co-worker on his first muskie hunt Saturday. After about 6 hours of hard twitching, cranking, jerking, buzzing and trolling, he landed his first -- a healthy 44 incher. Prior to our trip, he couldn't understand why I practice catch and release. After tangling with this bad-boy I think he started to understand. He came in the office today and all he could talk about was the next fish he hopes to catch and how he needs to practice his catch, handling and release skills. My work is done now that I have helped to spread the addiction. Sorry about the poor hold, still have some teaching to do.
