| Just wondered if anyone else has this motor, and how it shifts? Its a 2003 four stroke 115 Mercury. I just got the boat a few weeks ago, and it seems to make a loud clunk when i shift into forward and reverse. Seems to idle at a high rpm also, around 800-900.
any thoughts would be appreciated,

Location: Stevens Point, WI | I have an 02 115 four stroke, I think it kinda makes a click with you shift. But I am going to be out tomorrow so I can listen better and see. I will also look at the rpms at idle speed. So I will try to post tomorrow night if your interested in checking. |

Location: Iowa | My dads does the same thing and we have yet to have a problem with it...its a 2003 4 stroke 115 hp and it runs like a champ...really pushes our 1875 Pro-V Lund...about 35-40 mph depending on the amount of gear and size of the occupants...that nosie seems pretty normal to me though...

| I thought it was idling a little high myself. It was just run at the shop a couple of weeks ago when i bought it, you would think they would have done that!! I should call and ask them about it anyway.

When you shift, do it decisively. If you ease into gear, it will make more noise. |

| Does anyone know how to set the idle on this engine?? I talked to the marina and he said there is a screw that does it, just wondered if anyone knew where that was? He said there are some other screws that you don't want to mess with, so i am being cautious!!!

| I have a 2005 115 Mercury Four Stroke EFI. Mine will idle at 800 RPMs. It does make a little bit of a clunk but I think it's just the nature of the breed. The dealer told me that it was set where it was supposed to be and not to screw with it. Make sure you let it idle all the way down after starting before engaging the shifter. Someone mentioned before about shifting decisively, go ahead and get it in gear when you are ready to help avoid any grinding of your gears. This has just been my experience. |

| I have a 2000 Merc 4 stoke 75 hp. Mine also makes the load noise when shifting. I discussed this with several people when I first started running the engine, and as someone already said, I got "nature of the beast" type of answers. So there is probably nothing any different with your motor than thousands of others. I would think the engineers would want to correct that issue if they haven't already done so, it's annoying to say the least.....jim |
