Posts: 880 Location: New Berlin,Wisconsin,53151 | With the cold weather I was looking for a unique style of Quick Strike Rig. Does anyone have a picture of a light style rig that will hold smaller suckers? Most of the over the counter product is to heavy duty, even some of the better muskie bait shops don't have a variety. I will appreciate the help. Bruce

Posts: 663 | If you'd be interested, check the message board on my website. I just put up a short video on sucker rigging. You can use smaller hooks if you'd like but I usually go with a 4/0. It's my own adaptation of the lift-off or rubberband rig and it works just fine on small (10"-12") suckers. The video is right at the top of the message board titled "Sucker Rigging - Rubberband Method" Edited by Pete Stoltman 10/12/2006 12:15 PM

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Bruce, Sanks doesn't have any of my rigs left. I got 8 for 8 this year so far on my rigs. Last year I went 12 for 14 on them. They are great for the 10 to 12-inch suckers. The larger the suckers the longer and larger the rigs are made. I make them in all sizes and lengths. We should get together sometime soon and I will show you how to tie them up.

Posts: 663 | I've had a few guys e-mail me about the hooks. On bigger suckers I do use two hooks. For the video I only used one hook just to keep things simple.

Posts: 880 Location: New Berlin,Wisconsin,53151 | Pete, I've used what the Extreme One uses it's pretty simple but there's been some problems with the main knots around the split ring. What I was hoping for was a better variation of this method. I'm not to good at wire so I use 80lb floro to make them up. Thanks again for the help. Bruce

i most often use the rig described in Jerry Georgeson's article: http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/articles/10.13.2006/1111/Suckers.Th... here's some pictures of it. please forgive the small-sized sucker, it was the only thing available at the local bait shop when i went to take the pictures. normally, the spacing between the safety pin in the lip and the hook is not so big so there's not all that leader slack...but it gives you a good idea. when i'm wanting to rig something specifically for smaller suckers, i switch the hook to a smaller size (i cut the big one off and reattach a different hook using a split ring) and shorten the gap between the hook and the safety pin at the nose of the sucker. i like this set-up because the rig tears free from the sucker's lip easily and lifts the hook up and away from the sucker and right into the muskie's mouth. all your force is in one straight line on hook-set. Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Here is my rig. The small hook goes into the skin just below the nose holes and out. The second and third hooks go on each side of the sucker. The only hard part is to keep everything tight. Leader to the small hook, split ring and two ther hooks tight to the leader. This is by far my best hooking percentage rig. I have gone 32 for 26 on them in the past tree years. One of the missed hookups was from a 12 year old boy who didn't do a very good hook-set. I have caught lots of fish on the small front hook but most have been from the second hook(middle hook). The hooks in the rig I have in the picture are for smaller Spring time suckers around 6 to 8-inches. I like to beef up the two back hooks for larger suckers and make the leads longer. The small hooks remains the same because it just holds the sucker like a rubber band but has the hooking ability as a bonus. I will upload another picture with my rig on a rubber bait I have here. At least you can see how it hooks up to the sucker even though it's a bullhead lure. The hooks in the side must be just under the skin and out with only a little skin for little hooks and just a but more for larger suckers. If you go through too much skin the sucker will not tear free, if you don't do enough it will allow the hooks to dig into the sucker on the hook-set.
