You receive an Email from an fellow worker requesting your presence in sunny California the last week of October for a high level engineering meeting w/ San Francisco officials. Your boss's boss and executive level VP's are cc copied on this request.

You have been planning to fish the MF Presque Isle Outing for over six months and have scheduled vacation for that timeframe. How would you respond?

Here was mine:

Hi Gary, Of course I'd be happy to support this effort. I have scheduled
vacation from the Oct 25th to Oct31st. -> (Document link: EP SilconTeam
Calendar) I've been planning this fishing trip for over 6 months. I know,
what's it going to be? Fishing muskie's in Northern Wisconsin (most likely
miserable, freezing wet & snowing) or go to sunny California? Not much real
choice there! I'm available anytime after the 1st of Nov.

Al

Sorry my comment does not relate to this thread, but why can't I post on "Slap on the wrist"? Every other thread appears to be accessible. Any help would be appreciated.

Pardon my computer ignorance. What would cause it to be frozen?

Wow, Al. Only you know where you stand. I'd hate to lose a roommate and Sunday fishing partner, but could certainly understand how a person could feel how he might have to miss the outing.

That being said, I sure the heck am looking forward to meeting and fishing with you. I'd say your dedication to the outing should almost guarantee you a trophy at some point during the trip.

Somebody wanted a link to read the article.
The link was put up for us to read the piece mentioned.
No further comentary is needed, so it was locked down.
You might be able to start a thread over on walleyefirst if you feel the need.
EM.....if you go to California, it will fall in the ocean. Not that it would be a totally bad thing to have happen.
Go fishing. October in northern Wisconsin only comes around once a year.
You can go to California anytime.

I'm with Beav on this one. Beav, shoulda asked you to come out here to the PWT Championship, but figured you couldn't be gone a full week, same reason TJ isn't along for the ride.

Al, it doesn't much mater what the rest of us think, it's what's best for you. Go with your gut feeling, it's usually the best result. that being said---hope to see you in P.I.

I have had to cancel several vacations and guide trips due to last minute work committments. It happened again this spring for the 101 outing down to Cave Run.

When my boss said "you're going to have to re-schedule your vacation"

I simply said "this isn't a vacation, this is a fishing trip that I've been planning for almost a year. If it was just me, it wouldn't be a big deal, but I'd be bailing out on the guys I'm driving down with, the guys in my club, the guys I'm staying with, and the guys I'm fishing with. On top of that I lose my deposit for the cabin, my deposit for the guide dates, and the opportunity to go on a trip with 15 guys that only happens once a year. I put in for this time off 9 months ago, and you aproved it. You can't just expect me to drop everything a week before my trip because you can't get your $%^# together until the last minute and decide to send everyone to Washington."

So they said "well, what if we push the whole thing back a few days, can you fly right from KY to DC?"

I laughed...

"How do you propose I get from Muskie Mountain Lodge in the middle of rural Kentucky to the airport? You want to send a cab? You want to pay my friends gas expense for having to drive an hour out of the way towing a boat to drop me off at the airport? And that STILL doesn't solve the problem of how to get all my gear back to me, which I'll need for a torunament that I'm fishing the following Saturday. If you guys figure out a way to make that work, I'll be happy to fly out there."

So my boss said:

"What if we fly you out of Chicago Monday morning?"

I laughed again

"You know what, I can do that. But I gotta warn you -- after four days on the water and driving all night I ain't gonna be worth much by the time I get to DC, and I probably ain't gonna smell very good either..."

Funny thing -- they rescheduled the meeting for Wednesday.

I'm not telling you what to do, but it's been my experience that you have to be flexible and accomodating, but only up to a point. There comes a time where you just have to put your foot downand say "you know what? NO. I ain't doing that. You work it out however you need to, but here's where I stand"

I hate to draw lines in the sand like that, but sometimes you gotta.

Back in 86, I had the Iowa Pheasant opener planned for months. Had a motel booked for three days, all the land locked up to hunt, and had told my manager that I was taking that Friday and Monday off. Two days before, he says he needs me to work on Saturday, that it was inventory, and he wanted me there. When I reminded him I was leaving for Iowa on Friday, he said if I go, I migt as well stay there. So I did. Thye whole week. Shot lotsa birds, and had a great time. When I got back, there was a meesage on the machine to call his boss. I called the next day, and they offered me his job! He was no longer employed. Seems they found out how hw tried to screw me, and that didn't sit too well. The fired him on the Tuesday I was originally scheduled back!

I really didn't like that guy, or the company, and I was really looking for an excuse to quit. I can't say if you are in the same position, Al, but I undestand where you are coming from. See you at the Isle!
