This past season I made a small batch of panfish-shaped gliders, and painted them in Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, Crappie and a Shad pattern. Since I have seen many hooked panfish engulfed by muskies, I thought that it stood to reason that muskies would eat them up. My personal experience proved differently.
Pike ate them regularly, but I didn't catch a muskie on a panfish-shaped glider this year. I only heard from one guy who caught a couple fish on his Bluegill, and they were 38 and 40 inches.
2 Indiana fish fell to the Shad patterns, but they were both in the same size range.
Your opinion.......though they are 7" long, do you think that panfish lures don't get as much attention as perch-shaped lures do?
Or did I just not give them a fair shake? I'm debating whether to paint some more for next year or not. The paint jobs were very nice, but apparently muskies aren't fans of artwork.
Pros and cons of the panfish-shaped glider please.
Thanks,
Beav

im not sure but my opinion is that maybe a muskie ould pick a wounded bluegil out of the pack in the lake i fish i have a chartruse perch phantom and every cast there will be like 7 sunnys' following it so there is no shortage of sunfish im sure and have read articles about shad being good in places and i would keep im not sure what i would do i think it your decision just my 2cents guts

Beav,

I would stay away from a panfish shaped lure based in the hooking percentage. You want to minimize the opportunity in which a musky can bite the bait without getting hooks. In a typical "perch shaped" lure the back to belly measurement where the hooks are at is only 1" to 2". Very difficult for the fish to bite a lure and not get hooks - even if it came over the back it's never far from a hook hanger. On the other hand, a panfish shaped lure could have 3" to 4" distance between back and belly and would reduce the opportunity to get hooks into the fish if it came in the side or came over the top.

Just a theory.

So why would they eat the one on the right, but not the one on the left?
As far as hooking, I used 5/0 Eagle Claw Lasersharps and had no prblem hooking any of the pike that ate them.
They are a little over 3/4" thick, and I "T" the front hook that hangs right from the belly.

They eat Magic Makers and they are even a shorter lure with a deep profile. Don't give up on them yet!

I have prototyped two sizes myself and to be honest with you the only reason I have not put them in to production is the hooking percentages. The smaller one is ok but I have had the larger taken by more than a few large fish without any hookups. I can say the large bluegill pattern is extremely effective for attracting strikes but anymore if I want to use a bluegill pattern I use the Warlock in the sunny pattern because hook uos are much better.........Doug

All,

My best bait is a Slidin' Shad in a bluegill-esqe pattern that is quite similar to the one pictured. I haven't fished as much this year as I wish, but all my fish this year have come on that style and pattern. Most of my follows, too. It doesn't hurt that I fish this bait more than everything else.

In a place that forage is dominated by panfish or shad, it only makes sense that these baits would be effective. I like them, anyway!

Beav- Don't discount panfish shaped baits. The new Zalt Z (jerk/twitch) bait is panfish shaped and based on the first field tests in Canada, it definitely get's their attention and catches fish.

BTW: those look very sweet!

Have fun!

Beav,

I must have understood - when I was thinking panfish shaped I was thinking a 9" long, 5" wide bait shaped like a real bluegill. The shape in your pictures is fine and something that would work fine.

Magic Makers and Tippy Darters have accounted for many trophy fish, not to mention the SS Shads. I'd say they'll produce just fine. Don't give up on them yet.

I voted to keep it going and wait to see the results. I know I could catch fish on either one of those. Time and confidance is all you need with those baits. I can list a bunch of baits that are shaped like panfish. LeMay said it best......."Super Shad Raps"
