| From the studies done at Loyola University... they feel the lateral line is effective to TWICE the fish's body length.
I'm not sure how they can make that determination since it doesn't consider the source of water displacement. In other words, can it feel a jackhammer from a greater distance than a finning minnow? I would think so. That would mean a musky could feel a bucktail from a greater distance than a jig.

| If you are interested in the lateral line... I'd suggest reading the literature from Sheryl Coombs. Not specific to the musky like John New's paper, but some of the best research I've found on the function of lateral lines in general.
It will blow your mind when you see the capabilities of this highly sensitive organ. Puts an entirly new perspective on things. There are some quick links on my website to some of her material. Also, searching the Journal of Experimental Biology website will get you some interesting leads. |
