Theres an area on the lake I most often fish thats pretty heavily weeded. I've been throwing bucktails and spinnerbaits through it, mainly because they come through fairly clean, but for whatever reason, the fish aren't hitting them. It's an area that gets quite a bit of bass fishing pressure, and alot of guys throwing spinnerbaits, so I sort of think that the fish have become accustomed to them. Last year, we got quite a few on these baits, now this year, nowhere near as many, and when we do find em, they are small.
Now I watched, and spoke to a couple guys who were fishing this area, and in the past few weeks have been quite successful using what they called "big jerkbaits." I'm assuming Suicks, Bobbies, and maybe Sledges.
Now, if you were going to try this area, what would you throw? Which color? It's fairly stained and tops out at around 7ft. There are some walleyes and bass in the area, and a crap ton of perch. Is there anything I could do to make my baits more weedless?
Thanks in advance.
Mike

An unweighted suick/bobby or any chop style jerk work great for getting through even the thick stuff. They will back out of the weedsf very well.

What kind of weeds? you can use an unweighted jerkbait(suick, bobbie squirrelly burt). You will be surprised that they can go through weeds and not bring many back. the key is to let the bait rise almost back to the top before your next pull. Hang on tho thats when alot of fish like to smack the bait. I fish a lot of milfoil don't cast into the thickest stuff either. look for pockets, edges, lower weeds in the water and inside turns because thats where the fish will be laying. Sometimes your going to be bringing the salad back with you but hey thats part of the game. Hope it helps

Sounds to me like the perfect conditions for a walk-the-dog topwater bait. Think about it, a walk the dog topwater is nothing more than a glider on the surface. Key in on that area under low-light conditions or rainy days. KDAWG

just a thought: crankbait/twichbait you can usually bring them accross the tops of weeds then pop them down into patches and rip'em free if they have two hooks--like little ernies, stalkers etc. If the weed tops are at 7' I'd even use a jake.

I weighted and painted a Bobbie Bait for my buddy Sean and he threw it a lot this weekend. Came through the weeds really well and it rises nice and slowly on the pause due to the weighting.

I did that particular one in a Jailbird (Bumble Bee) pattern and it does have excellent contrast. Sean has done really well with a Perch Pattern bait this season and I think that it's those bars that give the bait the visual punch.

Hmmmm. I'd submit you need something other than a perch pattern in weeds, i.e., cabbage & the like.. The dark bars/light pattern of perch is intentional camouflage and finally tuned by mother nature for survival in weed beds. In open water it stands out. But, you may be better off with blaze orange or hot pink in weeds.

However, I'll readily admit I may be wrong!

Have fun!
Al

Trust me, I'd agree with you 100% on your point about the bars camoflaging the Perch in nature except that my best friend and Pro Staffer Sean Tremblay has consistantly outfished every other pattern with his 11" Perch glider in the weeds.

I think he was even a little surprised by just how deadly that pattern has proven to be. I've seen how many fish that bait raises and catches and it just plain outfishes everything else he's thrown.

The Taildancer is a great bait in fairly thick cover as well, it's very bouyant so you can back it out real easy and with the grub tail it is very deadly.

Jim Korducki at Ducktail Lures makes a sweet bait called the Weed Warrior. It is like a suick but is weedless, check it out....search ducktail lures on google and that will get you there.
