in a different thread, Donnie Hunt made the following good observation:

BIG Fish hang out with BIG fish...As Worrall mentioned, it is surprising....big fish fisherman fish for BIG fish on big fish spots, where there are 50"ers!! Yes, small fish will inhabit BIG fish areas...but more often then not, if you're fishing for big fish, the big fish will come, in the big fish spots...on a regular basis.

KEY: Find out where the BIG fish spots are, on a regular basis...then fish for BIG Fish!

so, with fall fast approaching, what are the key elements you look for in locating "big fish spots"???

complex structure with weeds and rock. Most of the maps i have seen usually have this stuff on them. The trick is to fish and figure out when the fish are there. Usually the prime times. moon rise/set sun rise/set and fronts. It seems cold fronts in the fall do not put fish down but make them more active.

Suspended off of breaks and hanging around deeper cribs on lakes. Main channels hanging off of structure.

Fish twitch baits aggresively, rip and pause, rip and pause; the big fish will move on them. Hang on when you pause, the most likely time for them to eat it.

Troll breaks and main channel areas. Size of the producing baits will be dependent upon the fish. One body of water I fish the big girls will eat a 6"-7" trolled bait over a 10"+ bait 9 out of 10 times or better.

Fish a lake that has a lot of big fish. I went to Eagle for the first time this year and every spot that we raised a big fish on had multiple big fish on it. Fish trophy waters if you want a trophy.

big fish need to eat...for the lake you are fishing figure out the forage and fish where they are...ie. ciscoes, fish the areas you mark them during the day or the areas you think they might move up on at nite..
shad, find the shad and cast around, over, next to the shad..
suckers, suckers love current..if any current is present like a river dumping in, perfect spot

other areas like big rocky main lake points with large boulders dumping off into deep water are proven big fish spots...
steep breaks next to deep water are good...find the baitfish and you will find big muskies for the most part...
