I have a 17 foot lund with a 115 yamaha on the back with three blade 13 or 17 pitch prop on the back. We 35 MPH, but I believe I should get more speed, is it just a matter of a different prop or is this about right? Thanks!!

The motor is a four stroke Yammy, don't know RPM's. The boat is a 17 foot lund Angler SS. Prop is aluminm. If this helps that would be great. Thanks!!

I had basically had the same set up, with a Yamaha Pro Series SS I could easily hit 44 to 45 mph

I have a 1700 Angler SS with a 90HP 2-stroke and I get 36MPH by myself with a 1/2 tank of gas and three batteries in the boat.
You should certainly get more speed. I talked to a guy on Crow this year who said he got 45MPH out of his 17' Mr. Pike with a 115 Yammy 4-stroke.

You should get more than 35 out of that rig. You need to determine your RPM's at WOT, and what hole is the motor mounted in. That rig should do 45 easy. I would say a 19 or 21 pitch SS prop will be the one for you. Get to your, or a good, dealer and see if he has a prop demo program. You should have a tach on that boat.

I had a 2002 Angler SS with a 135 Opti, and got 50+ loaded. GMG will say I'm blowing smoke, but I know what I know.

Shep, what is RPM at WOM? I see that you arer located in Greenville, do you know of any good dealers or shops in the area. Also we we have a tach, but I don't know when I should look at it for a RPM reading, idling or full speed? Also, what hole the motor is mounted in, what does that mean? Anything else would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I don't pay much attention to who services Yamaha's, so I won't be much help on that. Perhaps Ed's or Mr Outboard? RPM at WOT is how fast does the motor run at Wide Open Throttle. That motor should turn nearly 6000 RPM, I believe, when you are at full throttle, and trimmed out for max speed. The hole the motor is mounted in determines how much of the lower unit is in the water when on plane. If it is mounted all the way down, or in the top hole, it is possible the motor needs to be raised up a hole or two. A good dealer can help you with this.

Merc props will fit the Yamah's, so maybe call Denny at Fort Fremont Marine, and see if he can help you. Put up a post for him on WalleyeFirst.com.

Are you trimming up? You should get 5-7 mph just by trimming up

first things first...please post whether the speeds you are giving are from your graph or from a gps. my boat will run 40+mph on the graph but in reality its only doing 32-34 mph on the gps.

next thing is what kind of load are you carrying. my boat will get up to 35 or so on the gps if i'm by myself out panfishing. turn that into 3 guys, 3 musky boxes and a cooler and i'm lucky to hit 32!

there is a big difference between a 13 pitch prop and a 19 pitch prop, FIND OUT WHAT YOU HAVE. the higher the number the more top end speed you'll get, the lower the more out of the hole performance. pitch equates to the distance traveled forward for each revolution of the prop i.e. a 13 pitch will move you forward 13 inches for each revolution while a 19 will move you 19 inches with each revo.
your motor will also have a preffered rpm range and running the wrong prop could cause the engine to over rev at high speeds, so find out what you have!!

a tach is something thats almost a must have in a boat, really dont know why most dont come with them stock. a trim gauge is also a very nice thing to have as once you get figured where your optimum trim is for your boat, prop, load its easy to trim right back to that spot again, especially in a console boat where you cant just look over he transom to see where the motors sitting.

one other thing to remeber is to kind of figure a middle of the road of posted speeds others are attaining. often times guys do the same with how fast something goes as they do with how big their unit (lower i mean is...can be some exaggeration there!!!

Alright, the motor is mounted in the top hole. The pitch of the prop is 17, our backup prop is 13. Also the speed is from the GPS reading. So if we took the boat to a service center they could raise the motor and explain how to get better speed?

I'd be willing to bet you are over revving the motor with the 17P prop. I think you should probably have a 19 or maybe even a 21P. Stainless prop will help. And I do believe the motor should probably raised at least one hole.

A friend has that motor on a 18 foot C'liner, and he gets 42-44.

I run the same motor on a Crestliner CVX182. Motor rated max RPM is 6000. I run a Yamaha SS 19 pitch prop @ 5950 RPM and it gets 44 MPH on GPS. With a 19 pitch aluminum, I run 42 MPH @ 6000 RPM. I agree with Shep that with your slightly smaller boat and a 17 pitch aluminum prop, you are probably over revving your motor. Go to a 19 pitch stainless and you will be happy with the results.
