| I am a firm beliver that whenever a guy gets a chance to go muskie hunting, for cripes sake, go muskie hunting. Cause you never know when the are going to turn on. But, when would you say is the best time to plan a trip (during any month). New moon, full moon, right after new or full, etc. Does your decision change from, lets say, spring to summer moons?

| I really don't pay a lot of attention to moon phases, as you stated go fishing whenever you can but if I had to choose I would go with the new moon, I have had most of my larger fish come at night on a new moon (+ - a day). Nothing more exciting than a surface bait being slamed in total darkness on a warm moons less summer night[]

| I keep a log for all my catches and I started to notice that I was picking up more fish during the new moon period, Now that doesn't mean that I was fishing more during that period, but that I was catching more.
So I would try to plan a trip during the new moon period, And that's what I usually do now.
Good hunting,Jeff <>< |

| I have never seen any effect of moon phases on catching fish. So I pay no attention to it. |

| The new moon phase has been better for me,the 2 to 3 days before and after are great also. the full is good 2 to 3 before and after but have not done well the day of the full moon. Weather patterns along with the moon phases are extremly good, for example: a large front and 2 days before the new moon is a must fish or any other combo of weather and moon phases. I try to use both if I can but any time on the water is good, you cant catch them at home. |

| Man I wish all the locals believe in new moons like you guys. I myself swear by the full moons especialy the June and October ones. I have caught so many big fish during the fullmoon period that I have not missed the June or October ones since 1996. Now as a guide for the last 2 years I fish all the time as my logs still show an edge for the fullmoon but I did catch a super pig on a new moon. I ran my numbers not that long ago and found out that almost half my big fish came around the full moon as the other 75% of the time acounted for the rest.
If I had to pinpoint it I would say fish the 2 days before and ful moon day.[:sun:] |

| Richard: Just a thought do you think that maybe you are seeing more (Larger) fish on a full moon is that you fish mainly a river system where the majority of us fish lakes, It would be real interesting to compare the effects of the moon on lakes vs rivers

| Just to further complicate matters Ill throw this out. The full moon has been better for me on stained or murky water systems including area rivers. Definately the new moon has been significantly better on clear water systems. As others have suggested the two or three days before and after these periods are important also. The time periods of moon rise and moon set during those periods are even more significant. As the original poster said - Just go fishing but if its possible to correlate those moon factors by all means try it. |

| I`ll take the NEW MOON 10X over the full, clear or stained! Jeff |

| There is a lot to be said for when and how to fish moon periods, but you asked specifically about the full or new for planning a trip. I have no preference overall, but depending on when and how I'm fishing that will change my preferences. Here are some generalities:
In gereral, the first half of the season I prefer new moons and the second half (after August) I prefer full moons.
If I night fish a moon period I prefer to do it with a new moon, the lower the light conditions the better I do.
If the bulk of my fishing is going to take place during the day I prefer a full moon period. However, I like daytime new moons if the moon rise or set falls during the middle part (11am to 2pm) of the day. Moon overhead at this time is great also.
As to which days before or after a full/new, much of that depends on the exact day times that the moon rise and set and the moon overhead/underfoot take place. I prefer all of these during the middle part of the day.
If someone were to put a gun to my head and force me to pick one over the other I guess it would be new moons. They offer me a bit more flexability than full moons as to the fish activity during certain windows.

| I pay NO attention to the moon. I fish when I can fish... and really have seen no evidence of the moon making a difference. We should be able to catch fish no matter what the conditions. Sure, we can predict the moon cycle for planning a trip... but I'd much rather be able to predict/forcast the weather. |

|
| I agree with jlong. I'll take good "local weather conditions" over predictable moon phases anytime!

| I really don't plan trips around the moon phases. I pay attention to them and try to get out on prime days, but I still go whenever I can. Looking back at my log, I have noticed that I have ALOT more action 3 days prior to the new moon. Coming in a close 2nd is 3 days prior to the full. Good luck.

| I can't Let the moon phase or weather conds dictate when I'm to go out in my line of work but I guess if I had a choice, diffenetly the new moon with a weather system moving in with the one exception being Nov. then I prefer a full moon. Water temps and weather conditions coupled with a barometer reading between 29.5 & 29.9 are way more important for better fishing in my opinion |
