Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | A few weeks back there was a thread on washing/cleaning maraboo bucktails. Tried the search engine and couldn't find it, operator error on my part I'm sure. I have a bunch of them that have become matted down and before I ruin several hundred dollars worth of them I wanted to review the suggestions. Slamr/Lambeau a little help please... Thanks

| Hey Mark The best thing you can do in my opinion is fish with them, and then instead of throwing them in your box or on the boat carpet, just hang them up to dry. It takes a couple days if you hang them inside or in the garage or somewhere, but they dry in about 1/2 hour on the boat, and the wind blows the marabou back into it's once-fluffy condition... As for the colors bleeding? It only seems to happen the first few times you use it. | |||

Location: The Yahara Chain | Mark I believe that thread was on a different board (MH). I didn't see one on this board. What is your specific problem with the maribou. I have been making my own for years and the only problem that I have ever encountered was when I sprayed some fish scent on the feathers....it ruined them.

Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Had to have been on this site as I hardly have time to view this board any more and honestly, I dont' see other sites except Esox Angler's "Next Bite" every so often. That's partially why I retired as one of the Moderators here. I always hang them in the boat to dry on the ride home and they fluff back up and look great when dry. We get significant algae blooms on our lakes and I'm not sure if there is algae drying on the feathers or if it's the density of the water with the suspended algae but I've noticed lately that they don't seem to exhibit that "pulsating" or "breathing" action like they used to. Seems their just kind of flat and not as "full" when reeling them in. Thought they might need a good cleaning... I don't think simple soap and water would hurt but I don't need them smelling like clean laundry either... Appreciate the feedback guys.

Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Tried washing two of them yesterday when I got home from the office, used warm water and a small amount of dish soap. I then accellerated the drying process by using a blow dryer, could have just hung them up. They certainly appear to be more "fluffy" than prior to washing them. I will know for sure after I fish them but suspect this cleaning process worked. Coincidentally, I checked emails at home last evening and I recieved a message from a friend who used to be the owner and one of the premier manufactures of maraboo/maribou bucktails. His suggestion was similar to what I tried. (warm not hot water, some dish soap, let them soak for a few minutes, swish around in water, rinse, and hang up to dry) Suspect any liquid soap with good "suds" action, dish soap, shampoo, etc. would work.
