The Minnesota Muskie Tournament Trail Vermilion tournament started out on day one by racking up 10 muskies up to 53" by noon. Clear skies, light and variable winds, and near perfect conditions on a post cold front day on the big V created conditions setting the stage for an ALL time MMTT record.

23 fish were boated by the field of 64 teams, with 5 over 50 and 2 over 49". Temps were in the mid 70's, and it seems there were multiple patterns at play. Reports of large fish sighted, hooked up and lost were numerous, and tomorrow promises to be even better on the water than today. Conditions on the huge impoundment were absolutely perfect for traversing the lake end to end, and look about the same for Day Two.

The largest fish, caught by team number 47-- STAWSKI, RICK; STAWSKI, RAYMOND-- was 54", and they doubled with a 43" fish. They are, however, in second as team 38--ARONSON, TODD; LOFRANO, TY -- tripled with a 41", 46", and 51".

MMTT Executive Director Paul Hartman reported that the weather tomorrow looks absolutely perfect, with a front working in and possinble showers in an otherwise partly cloudy sky. Temps are to hit 80 tomorrow and winds are to be varible. Paul feels the bite will improve, if that's imaginable!

Watch for pictures of the Day One action as soon as the Office at headquarters opens in the morning tomorrow, the Final day of the event. MuskieFIRST will present a Minnesota Muskie Tournament Trail Vermilion album containing every shot of every fish from the event as they are submitted.

The Noon update from the Vermilion MMTT is just as amazing as yesterdays and believe it or not, larger fish were caught. Team 36 put a 54.5 in the net, and Team 41 boated a 53.5. There were 18 more fish registered at noon today, and 4 were over 50".

Communications were poor on Paul's cell, so I can't update the leaderboard until I am certain of the teams and weights, look for that this afternoon after 4:30 PM. We also are not receiving the pictures because of a very slow internet connection timing out, we should have those up and in an album tomorrow or Monday depending when Paul can get to a high speed connection.

Watch for more updates on the final day later on this afternoon!

The Minnesota Muskie Tournament trail Vermilion event ended this afternoon at 2 PM after setting an all time MMTT record for big fish. 45 Muskies were registered, 9 were 50" or better, and 1/2 the total number caught were over 46". Weather was as promised yesterday, and the fish cooperated! Vermilion is at her peak, and the MMTT visited the system at what appears to be the perfect time.

MMTT Director Paul Hartman said all fish were successfully released. The MMTT uses bump boards and digital cameras as well as a fleet of judge boats, an innovative and good-to-the-fish method of accurately judging and entering fish in an on the water live release event.

Team 37, BUECHNER, BILL & HAMERNICK, JASON put a couple pigs in the boat today, adding to a 42" for a three fish day. The 50.5" and 50" fish weren't enough for the win. Neither was team 36, RUTHERFORD, GARY'S two fish today, a 44.5 and a 54.5, good enough for second by the smallest margin when added to his 46" , as Team 41 SOLEM, DANIEL & LANE, LEE boated a 41.5" and 53.5" added to a 50" Day One fish to take home the first place check and trophy. Results are unofficial at this point, but according to the data called in by executive director Paul Hartman. As soon as we can get a cell call through up there we will confirm the results. Paul has promised the pictures will be sent to us tomorrow as soon as he can get to a high speed connection.

I think RUTHERFORD caught 2--54's and a 55 last year out of Vermilion, Just mind boggling that one guy can catch 3 giants in 1 year.

It was an awsome event, 10 fish topping 50", 46 fish for 61 anglers, great time and great event. Thanks to all the sponsors and The Landing for hosting the event. Pauls puts alot of his time in these event which help support the stocking of more fish in MN. 53" and your in 11th place in a 1 1/2 day event. Also a big thanks to the judges who volunteer their time for these events.

Great pics. It sounds like the touney went well. Congrats to all who caught fish. Nice Job Paul H.
I see one of the fish has a fin clip. What was the length of it? Does anyone from up in that area know what year the clipped fish was stocked?

They clipped the right fin in 1993, 1996, 2000 It's very possible it could be from 1996.
Some fish have reached the 50" mark in 9 years

A few caught trolling. I would say proportionate (sp?) to how many people were doing it, which wasn't very many where I was at anyway.
