If you could pick one person (guide or tournament pro) to fish with for a day that you think would open your eyes to different ways of catching muskies, who would that be? And what would you hope to learn?

I'd probably go with a guy like Tom Gelb and try to learn something about his row-trolling approach on deep, clear lakes.

I fish with Scott Kieper in the Hayward area every September. All he has shown me is how to put 9 fish in the boat over the two times we've fished with him. Two years ago we boated 6 and last year we boated 3. Our average catch was 39-40" for those 9 fish. Last I talked to him this year he put over 75 in his boat by early July. Now I just need to do a better job of practicing what I was taught.

I have fished a lot with Luke Ronnestrand on Mille Lacs or Vermillion, and I still learn something new everytime. All guides are good for the most part, just think of a bunch of questions to ask before you go.(write them down!!) It is easy to just sit back and fish when fishing with a guide, but you have to ask questions and make them explain why they are running the spot the way they are. A couple days with a guide can really cut down the learning curve.

Brian Major out of Moroson LOTW.

You'll get second best spots, second best info, and get a shot at the second biggest fish he has going. What a hoot!

I really learn a lot from the Extreme One, Dorazio, DaveJ, and Worrall. And I never even fished muskies with Worrall.

I think the top two guys I would love to fish with would be Dick Pearson and Jason Long.

As much as I like LOTW, I don't get up there much. I'd probably choose to fish with someone who knows the lake I fish the most inside and out. That way I'd be able to use the information I learned all the time. The lake would be Detroit Lake in MN., and the guy around here that knows it better than anyone happens to be my younger brother. So I guess I'd fish with him.

overall probablly steve herbeck... i think he is part musky! if i wanted to learn alot about fish catching skills in a day id probablly go with mike hulbert..this guy puts more fish in the boat than anyone i know...lots of multiple fish days, and takes fig8 to a differnt level. early season, finesse fishing and learning to use smaller baits the right way early in the year id go with gare myshack out of sugarcamp.

Schweik/Hillman - unmatched tournament record - What do they look for in choosing their locations based on the various conditions? Current? Sun? Wind? How are they reading the water to get on fish most of the time? That's what I want to know.

ya, if i could take a day with anymusky fisherman i would take the dem crew. they have soo many
custom lures and nice paint jobs we will have to catch tons of musky. dont dem, dem2, musky911
ill bring the net, hook cutters, polarized sunglasses, needle nose pliers, jaw spreaders, leaders, and
pretty much everything but lures seeing how all you have are custom lures, no release tools or
anything. maybe this fall dem crew? i am looking foward too it.

I don't necessarily think just because someone is a "guide" they can or will help you get better....just fish with the best fishermen you can find..guides, locals, guys in your musky club etc...
flat out fish with the guys that consistently boat fish ...yes, most guides do...but it might be cheaper to just get to know some great sticks if possible..fish w/ them and more importantly watch how they work the boat, baits, how they do figure 8's, and ask questions....

also, I'd have to chime in and say Donnnie Hunt showed me the best way to do BIG figure 8's a few years ago...though at the time I didn't know how right he was...I sure do now...

I'd like to fish with Maina someday...

There are some great local (to me) guys that I'm looking forward to joining on the water this season. For me, I think spending time on the water with people that know the waters better than you is the way to go. A guide will help put you on fish on his lakes but if that 's not where you fish, it may not help as much.

I do believe that trying new things is always good and working on your weaknesses will make you more productive. I have very little trolling experience so that's something I am going to work on this fall especially.

Anyone who can make you think or look at a different perspective. Whether they have years upon years of experience or are just getting into it. Time on the water...any water...something can be learned that can be applied. Trout streams, small rivers, big lakes, or just watching water run across a driveway, you can still learn something. Having spent a day on Lake Michigan with Chuck and A-ROZ there was a bunch of quirky ideas that came up from open water trolling for Kings. Last night I learned that both Esox2 and A-ROZ are annoyed by the same kind of wicked bug hatch. I'd be interested in fishing with DudeLksLkALdy to learn more about this doughball stuff.

Anyone who can take you to that next little level...could be one of the greats in the sport or a 10 year old kid that makes some random observation that you overlook.
