Posts: 7106 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Mr. Worrall brought up a good topic about how to stay COOL in the heat of the summer, but what is everyone's preferred method for actually catching fish when its a zillion degrees out? Bright skies, very little or no clouds, but hot as hades! ***thinking other than the usual "stick to low light periods - early and late in the day"

Posts: 1764 Location: Ogden, Ut | I kinda run under the assumption that the fish have no idea what the air temperature is (or that there is atmospheric air for that matter). I may cheat a bit deeper and hit shaded areas a bit more due to the light intensity, but I don't play it much different on a sunny day that's 80 degrees vs. a sunny day when it's 104 degrees. I do, however pay more attention to fish handling, etc. when air temps are way hot; trying to minimize the individual fish's exposure to hot air (I guess that means more than not talking to them too much while they're in the net. Posts: 699 Location: Hugo, MN | It really depends on the Lake. The clearer lake ovbiously is not going to hold the same amount of heat as a deeply stained lake. One successful strategy I have employed in the heat is working Vertical Structure i.e. look to deeper, cooler water. However, I've also found fish in the same locales as they are always hanging out. So, as always, Muskie Fishing, like weather remains an inexact science.

Posts: 1168 | Look for cooler water....like rivers! For the sun, no clouds side of it. I've got a few lakes that are good under those conditions. Or at least I have more confidence in them when the sun is high, no clouds, post frontal...so I'll hit those.

Posts: 3915 | Like ubwhatever above, hit a river if you can, troll/cast likely structure over and over and over. That's what got me the best fish so far. But here's an observation.... Last year I was on Mille Lacs during a heat wave. Really really hot, little wind. I ran into a couple M1 guys, one in particular who really knows his stuff, to find that they were not moving many fish in the deeper water, and I don't recall they tried shallow at all. After two days of nothing deep I moved to fishing shallow. What worked was shallow (2-3')flats with wind-blown reeds with a white/silver raddog. I was drifting/forcing my little boat right through the thick stuff, throwing shorter casts in case I hit a fish. Hitting the short holes, close to the boat and being quiet. Hot as a Beeeeaaatttch, mid-day upper 90's, I boated a 43" and had a couple nice follows. They were there and they were hungry. Locally, here in sw MI, mid-summer I mostly fish only at night, midnight to whenever, because that's the only time I can move fish on the warmer high-pressure waters. If I had to, during the day I could rake the open waters with two lines out, one on both side, trolling just above the thermocline, trying to find a hungry fish suspended under roving clouds of baitfish. Move move move, cover water, but not fast. I wonder what a spoonlugger would say about this topic.

Posts: 724 Location: Southern W.Va. | In the summer heat I go to a nearby river , water stays cooler and the fish seem to be easier to contact. Now if I could just get them to eat.............................. Mauser
