A 49 inch 33.6 lb. muskie was caught at Pineview yesterday. DWR offices were closed for the holiday, so the fish wasn't confirmed as a record until this afternoon.
Sheesh, what next? I'll post some pics if they become available.

Has to be very gratifying to see those big girls out there Sorno. Keep the muskies growing out there, sir! (And those cool little salmon, too)

The fish had been at the taxidermist for a day before the pics were taken; I'm sure there's better ones, but these were taken by DWR personnel.
A 48.5 incher was caught yesterday by a 12 year-old too.

In that picture, that fish looks like Franky Carbone when they found him.

#*^@ nice fish, congratulations to the young lady.

Sorno,
with the likely increased interest that these catches are likely to bring to fishing tigers in Pineview, does the DWR have any plans for promoting CPR more actively? (or are they already?) or do they view the fishery primarily as put-and-take similar to some other species?
i'm thinking mostly about the 30-40 inch fish that need to go back if they want to keep producing trophies. what's the minimum size limit? any consideration given to setting it relatively high?

Craig (the regional manager) and I have already had a couple of talks about that very issue. Promotion of the fishery is crucial to maintaining it's existence, but I do agree that fisheries can be 'loved to death'. Fortunately, Utahns are used to catch rates for other species that are much higher than even this muskie fishery offers; they get bored after a few hours and go back to fishing smallies and rainbows. We have plans in the works to heavily promote proper C & R, proper gear and encouraging the careful handling of the mid-sized fish. The problem is that the essential educational messages don't make for as good of stories, so even our own outreach personnel don't see the need to seize this opportunity at times. We'll work on it - I'll do my best to make sure there's enough fish (and big ones) for all my visitors!
S.

Minimum size limit is 40" currently with no plans to change it.

Id love to see a 50 inch size limit out there. It would be interesting to see just how big they could get. Kent, whats the longest tiger that you have heard of from pineview?

Our C & R state record is 53 1/4". Bear in mind, it's an 'honor' system.
S.
(if we had a 50" minimum size limit, I feel that we wouldn't have a catch and keep record at all)

Sorno,

Have you guys done any type of growth rate studies with your Tigers? What year do you think these big fish were stocked?

ummm, those ARE leech lake strain tigers...

i'd take a tiger's growth rates up against a true muskie's any day.

NMTiger - there were some growth rate observations early in the program, but to be honest, nothing was of much of a concern once the fish got above about about 35-40". Getting them to survive to that size where they were/are an effective predator was the plan. It was a big surprise how fast they got there. The ones in the picture are probably 7 years old. But that's just my educated guess. We never sampled any that large in our trend netting in order to age them (our mesh size was too small - no need to kill the big ones). We were always more interested in seeing the relative number of young of the year that recruited. Once they got about 20" or so, we figured they'd survive.
The age information of the big ones would be interesting, but not of much use in management.
