| Can anyone help with rod comparisons? I've thrown a St Croix Avid 8' heavy/fast and St Croix Premiere MH/fast I prefer the avid action over the premier. How do the following stack up action wise to the above? Shimano Compre 8' X-heavy fast Shimano Compre 8' Heavy/fast Lamiglass 8'6" X-Heavy Fig Rig??? Do any of the shimano or the lami have similar action/backbone as the 8' avid? Anyone out there who can give me an honest comparison? Rob Myers, you out there??? I know you have repped for both.... Anybody else? Thanks. Bryan | |||

Posts: 5874 | All I can say is after throwing St Croix for many years, this year I have switched to Fig Rig Rods, and my shoulders thank me. Even after I got my Avids, I would still get that knot in the middle of my shoulder blades. Now I can fish all day, and I feel great. No more knots, no more sore shoulders and back. I really like my new Fig Rigs. Guess I should add that my Avids I threw the most were a 6'9" Heavy and 7'6" MH. I really liked them, but the Fig Rigs are so much lighter, and balanced better. They just fit me, and my style of fishing. First time I used one for an extended time was Kyle's at the first Sab Bay outing. That is when I decided to get the Avids. I still got the sore shoulders, and the knot in my back. Now, I have the Fig RIgs, and I sold all my St Croix rods. Well, all except the Dave Dorazio edition! Edited by Shep 6/16/2006 9:01 AM

Posts: 1168 | Another vote coming for the Fig Rigs. I've got a couple of St. Croix's and like them, they have a time and place and are a quality product. Also take a look at the Fenwick Techna AV's. If I lost my Fig Rig and Techna I don't think I'd be able to fish. I use those two rods about 90% of the time. -Bob

Posts: 22 Location: Albuquerque | Bryan, I can't give you a comparison between the rods you have listed as I flyfish 95% of the time. The rods I flyfish for Tigers and Pike with are of the $600 to $700 saltwater variety that are made by Sage Fly Rods and they do a good job. However, when I choose not to flyfish I use a 7'6" Med/Hvy Muskies Inc. Edition Fig Rig and I can tell you that this rod is simply amazing and is probably worth at least twice what you'd have to pay for one. Being a flyfisherman with a closet full of expensive rods, I've learned to be particular about what I fish with in terms of quality, strength, and weight and in my opinion it would be tough to beat this Fig Rig for a perfect mixture of all three. It just has that rare combination of power and lightness that makes it effortless to cast but with more than enough backbone to easily handle big fish.

Posts: 5874 | What if I told you that all of my rods FLOAT WITH A 400 CALCUTA on them! I'd say the cork handle had enough material to overcome the weight of the reel, and the rod. Not saying they aren't good rods, but that hardly proves anything. Most of my casting rods will float with a reel on them. I like and get the big cork handles. Lots of good rods out there. I'd suggest you get out with guys that you know have rods that you want to try out, and do just that. You will find a rod that's just right for you.

Posts: 4266 | I used to have that problem until I slipped Bass Pro Shops rod balancers on the butt of my rods. Now all of my rods, even my walleye rods, have rod balancers on them. I think every rod made should come with a rod balancing system built in. Beav

Posts: 100 | We were out fishing yesterday morning when my boat partner took a cast with an 8 foot fig rig and snap! there went half of his rod chasing his bulldawg down.... Broke right at the edge of one of the wraps. That tells me the wraps are either to tight or the rod glue is to stiff. that was the second one in a year for him.

| Trap, was that an Fig Rig Extreme? I had the same thing happen last weekend with a 7-6 MedHvy, except I was throwing an SS Shad... go figure. I have been assured it will be replaced, can't argue with the customer service. | |||

Posts: 317 | I got rid of all my St. Croix, Except for my H 7.6 premiere, which is bulletproof-used for trolling/suckers. And switched to Fig Rig. very light. Very nice.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | I also run Fig Rigs exclusively and love them. I too had a rod or two break over the past couple years, but they have been good about replacing them, and even better about fixing the problems associated. In addition to the light and responsive line of graphite rods, I have become dependant on the equally aggressive style, durability, and versatility of the glass rods they make. Check them out!

Posts: 921 Location: Apollo, PA | The lamiglas is a much heavier stouter rod. I have one in a HR jerk and really love it for big gliders. I would buy a 8' 6'' for trolling or casting big stuff. MY ROD OF PREFERENCE IS A PROFESSIONAL EDGE. CALL OR EMAIL KEITH. HE WILL MAKE YOU A CUSTOM ROD AT A GREAT PRICE. HE'S THE BEST................... This is not a paid political announcement PS

| here's another vote for Diamondback. (i got mine from Professional Edge) it's extremely light with a smooth consistent action. i got an 8' medium power and paired it with a light low-profile reel for bucktails and in-line topwater. what a dream this is to cast - and the flexibility of the rod makes it very forgiving when fighting a fish. i asked Keith to make it with a longer (18") butt, and this makes an incredible difference when doing deep figure-8's. even my dad (who is NOT a muskie fisherman) commented this last weekend about how nice it was to use that rod. the rest of my lineup is the standard workhorse of St.Croix Premiers in various powers and actions depending on the use. for the price, it's hard to beat the utility and durability of these rods. sure, they're heavier, but i know they won't snap on me while casting or fighting a fish, and i'm not at the point in life (yet) where a lighter rod is necessary for me to stay on the water all day. i have no perosonal experience at all with Fig Rigs, but what i've heard (again, no first hand experience) is that Fig Rig acknowledged an issue over the past couple years with line wraps that were too tight, leading to rod failure and that this issue has been addressed in their rods now and people can cast away with confidence. | |||

| here at MuskieFIRST we do our best to walk the narrow line between facilitating the flow of honest and objective information vs. product bashing. emotional rants tend to be high on feeling and low on information, and end up getting put in the "bashing" category and get yanked. anonymous posts have this amazing correlation with emotional rants. if you're going to say what you think about something, it's best to actually share who you are. so please bear that in mind...Bob. saying in an initial signed post, "I say this with no malice towards the others", acknowledging you're on the pro-staff of a competitor, and then following up in an anonymous post that does demonstrate malice is kind of an odd way to go about things. especially for someone who's been involved in public relations and promotions for as long as you have been. if you have an opinion on something, say it. if you know about a problem with something, say it. just stick to the facts about it and leave the anonymous ranting at the door. the issues with Fig Rig are definitely talked about in the way you say...so let's talk about them! in an open and fact-based way. | |||

Posts: 734 | I owned three Lamiglass and they are some of the best store bought rods I have ever thrown. I have used them in all types of weather conditions and would reccomend to anyone. They are a little heavier, but not to bad. I still prefer Thorne Bros customs, I have a Legend Tournament St Croix (Thorne custom) and I can throw almost anything with it. Small bucktails to Mag Dawgs no problems. They are really nice rods but also very expensive. I have also thrown the Compre Extra Heavy and that is a really nice Bulldawg or big glider or topwater rod for the $$.

Posts: 101 Location: Liberty, IN (OKI Tri-State) | Mike ... you are 1000% correct. I did everything but put my name there and have never in all of my years EVER posted anonymously. Usually it is the coward’s way of "attacking" and I am glad you called me on it. The integrity of this site, the good info and generally good natured banter WAS NOT well served by my admittedly emotional and pent up rant. I apologize to all of the regulars, guests and staff of MuskiesFIRST for both the flavor of my post and, more so, doing it without my signature. It doesn't move us forward in a positive direction and it is not the sort of thing that I endorse. I will now take a much-needed "time out" and hope that no one is too upset by my lack of judgment or proper etiquette. Sincerely, Bob Osborne Edited by Fin-Addict 6/17/2006 4:42 PM

Posts: 32944 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I have a mish mash of rods from the old Aurora brand to a couple Shimano rods I like quite a bit; I've also a couple older Fenwicks. I use the rod balancers too, because Beav told me to. He was right. I prefer a 7 to 7.5' rod, no need for a great long stick for me; besides, I can't do my 'glider savant' deal with a long rod as easily. I've been messing around with the idea of going 100% Fig Rig too, have a couple and like them alot. We'll have to see what develops this season. I like my Shimanos too, so that's also an option since my every day sticks are getting old (8 years now) and need to be replaced. Rob, you out there? Otherwise, I might just head to Gander and see what rods I can find on the shelf that feel good to me.
