GGGGGEEEEEEOOOODDD!
I had at least 6 fish in the boat by this time last year (I have not refered to my log for the official count).
Is anyone else feeling a slower than normal start? or is it just the brand new boat blues?

Rob-
Don't give up..it can be cracked!! Had the same deal when I got my boat...then I painted baitfish on the bottom of it and it worked like a charm.

I have actually had a pretty good start so far around here, 9 fish in the boat from the WI river so far but no size. Biggest is only 38" Tough this past week for me in the Rhinelander area, a few swipes at baits but no fish boated during the post frontal conditions on the lakes up there. Need another warm snap to get things going again.

Rob,

Could be the new boat skunk! Mine lasted a couple months in 2002. Once it was gone, the fish came at a quick pace.

But this front sure killed me this past weekend. Especially Sunday, I couldn't buy a walleye over 15"! Just one would have meant a check.

After chasing these beast for 30+ years I have learned that in Post Frontal conditions Last Light is always the best, I noticed that some of you stated that fish were hot from 7 - 8 PM but did you stay out until dark ?

Ben, the more night shifts I work in ER the more true the second part seems to become.

Last night was good for my clients as well Brad. 41 and 37 1/2-inch muskie boated on there 1/2 day outing on Pewaukee. 8-9:30pm was the time.

Rob, things will get very good as the weather gets back to warm. In a week you will be on fish and happy as can be.

Can someone explain this? We fished the early season cold front in Eagle River and Rhinelander and none of the small baits brought fish to the boat, only the big baits? m

I also caught a fish last night during that window and had a few others moving, first fish I have caught since southern opener. But being on rivers may also be key during this slower spring, just a thaught.

Brian are you in Point or Treehaven? If you are in Point I need a partner for league next wednesday. I think we are on DuBay that night.

As far I as post frontal goes I am the king of post frontal conditions this year.

big baits .... slooooooooooooooowwwwwww .... with lots of stops and stalls on cold front conditions..... when she warms up again, go back to the old gospel music. the tougher the bite, the deeper and slower i tend to fish. let the bait fish be your guide ... when they are in deep water and i mean deep (usually during these tougher periods) ... present deeper and slower regardless of the size you choose to throw ... when you mark the baitfish on the humps, points and shallower feeding areas pick up the pace but never be afraid to throw big any time of the season. a musky eats whats available and easy to eat ... "availability" puts them in their place in the water column usually right amongst the food and "easy to eat" means to match the situation relative to the weakest of the herd (baitfish tendency) ... when you find the baitfish .... stay put and fish trying to learn what the herd is doing through the progression of the day .... the lion can always be found just outside the herd of wildabeast ....

Well said Sled....Slow was the ticket and in there face was where we put the baits. I also agree that the deeper water will produce better than the shallow water at this time. Both of the fish we caught were very close to 30 plus feet of water.

It has been a slow start as well in my boat this year. We are getting into fish, but are having to work much harder than normal at this time of the year. I think a lot of people are thinking post frontal COLD fronts, but the major warm front we had for the opener was just as bad. The fish are pretty much located as deep in the water column right now as they would typically be in August, but are much less willing to come up after a lure.

What has been working in my boat has been bouncing around till you find something that shows promise. Typically I am fishing suspended, but some of the lakes this year just aren’t going suspended yet. In those cases we are finding the fish in the weeds. Yes, I am fishing the weeds! For whatever reason late morning has been decent, and last light/night has been the best. The mid day fishing has been terrible!

The best thing to do when the times are as they are is to be persistent. For example. Two weeks ago we fished from 4:00 am to 11:00 pm. We managed to put three fish in the boat, but boy it seemed like we got our @sses handed to us. First fish boated was at 9:00 am along a deep weed edge. The fish started moving, but we had to leave the lake. New boat partner and different water, and the fishing was tough. Raise one fish suspended, and went back to some weeds. Raised two nice fish quickly, but then it died. Right at dark (several hours since last fish seen) we put a 42.5” in the boat suspended over deep water (35’). Half hour later we put a 45.5” in the boat over deeper water (40’). Next hour dead, and we called it quits. Keeping an open mind, bouncing around to different spots, and being persistent paid off for us.

last night we found bait fish in 18' of water and once you came up they were gone ... we ended up fishing a spot (with the baitfish marked ... actually blacking out the screan) the size of two campsites for 4 hours straight without moving and finally scored with a fish. it's definitely been tough fishing and caused you to use the careful consideration that i love about this sport ... lately it seems being able to get a shot at one equals a successful outing ... at least in northern wisco ... i'm ready for that to change ...
