I have some questions about snaps and swivels. I've been using coast lock snaps on crane swivels for years and have been more than happy with them. I know many of you only use ball bearing swivels, but I guess I'm not sure what I've been missing. My coast lock snaps wear out and break long before the cheap crane swivel fails and then I just use a new cheap snap swivel. This summer I'm planning to switch over the the ball bearing swivels though. I found a source where I got #4 ball bearing snap swivels for 53.5 cents each. The photo where I purchased them from online showed that I was ordering these with coast lock snaps, but when they arrived I discovered they have interlock snaps. The ball bearing swivel looks to be of good quality. Do any of you have good or bad experience with interlock snaps? I've used interlock snaps for years on my lighter pike gear, but those snaps are much smaller than these. I get the impression that these might have a tendancy to open up easier on their own than coast lock snaps. Another question.... How long to ball bearing swivels last? I'd think a guy could keep using a ball bearing swivel with replacement snaps for years. Do any of you do that? Any info you'd like to share regarding snaps and swivels is very welcome. I'm specifically looking for people with experience (good or bad) with these interlock snaps to know if I should even consider using them.

Thx for the advise,

I honestly don't understand why so many guys insist on BB swivels.Unless you are using inline bucktails or trolling spoons they aren't really necessary.Otherwise i don't see why the extra cost of BBswivels is justified especially for guys casting cranks, jerkbaits or just about anything else. I personally use Spro power swivels on my own homemade leaders and they are much smaller than BB swivels and have a higher break strength. For snaps ,the best you can use are either crosslok snaps like Berkleys or Staylok snaps by Stringease.I would not suggest using any other type as many open easily on their own and i've had even small fish straighten out interlock snaps when i grabbed the leader to control and unhook the fish at boatside! I've never seen a swivel fail but snaps do get weaker after they've been opened and closed many times so you should replace them every so often.

Don't use a snap at all, just use a split-ring instead. I went away from snaps 15 years ago after a failure. The Bucher rings made by Worth are the best and all of my baits get them on every hook hanger and line tie. The stock rings get trashed. As far bearings go, all I use are welded ring ball bearings, but I find that alot of jerkbaits and even many top-waters run better w/out a swivel at all. Jason

many use overkill. i swaear they dont know what drags systems are for. i use duo-lok snaps with crane swivels. never lost a fish due to terminal failure yet. unless your using bucktails duo-locks are affordable and excellent quality.
