I tried making my own, and when I went to us them the other day the hair started falling out. What kind of glue do you use to keep the hair in place. Thanks for any info.

Hi:
First make sure that you are not trying to put on too much hair at a time when you cut it off the tail, that will often make it hard to work with. Deer hair has a lot of short hollow hairs, so when you cut a clump off the tail you need to grab the long end off the hairs and use your other hand and brush your finger through the other end (side you cut off of the tail). Make sure you get as many of those short hairs out as possible. When you place the hair on the hook/coil make a few loose wraps with the thread to hold it in place. Then dab a little bit of head cement (can get it from moore's, stamina, etc.) on the hair and on the thread. Then I will make a few more very tight wraps with the thread. As long as you have a fair amount of cement on each 'clump' of hair when you place it on the coil or hook, and you make those wraps tight, you should have no problem with the hair pulling out. When i finish each tail, i will put a few half-hitch knots, then mix a little 5 minute epoxy, put a little bit on the finished tie then roll it between my fingers for about 30 seconds. Then leave it dry for a few hours and you will have a nice hard finish. Hope this helps, and if you have any questions or run into any more problems i'd be more than happy to help you out. Good Luck!!

I do the same as above, but I use model glue in the tube. The same as you used to build model cars when you were a kid. Never had problems with it. Holds up in the water. The head of the tail I usually wrap with D red thread and cover with epoxy.

I used to own M&G Tackle in the late 80's & early 90's. I use to buy Schmidts flex seal till they went out of business. So now I make my own flex seal that can not be found in stores. The problem is shipping. To ship the flex seal you need a speical license and is very costly. To costly to be in business.Eagle tail lures still buy's it from me but he is local to me in Minneapolis. Good luck

I use "hard as nails", a clear coat for ladie's fingernails, available in any walmart. it seeps into the threads, and when you run out, go grab your wife's supply

Tight wraps and smaller amounts of hair is key to keeping a tail together.

Any decent fly tying head cement should work. Whatever you use has to penetrate the threads, though. 5 minute epoxy or any other heavy, hard coating works well if you want to coat the threads afterwards, but without a penetrating head cement first there's not much point in protecting the thread.
