There is a great post going about snaps, how about some info on the best split rings you people have used. I have become an anti snap guy , not because of a snap that opened up, it plain just broke. I have never heard of leaders coming off of split rings before Jlong posted. Has this happened to others too?? Jlong, have you found a better split ring to use that didn't allow this to happen? Very curious, thx much.

Bucher Tackle, I've never had one fail and I'd like to hook the fish that can pull them apart.[:)]

I second the Bucher Super Split Rings. They seem to hold up to anything. Have not had one problem with them.

I third bucher tackle and wolverine but I don't like the thick 3-coil design. They are really strong but too thick

Bucher's for sure, I used to make them. Nothing tougher.

I hate to burst your bubble guys... but I've had plenty of Joe Bucher Split Rings open up on me. They are still my favorite... but I do not use them to attach my leader to the lure with anymore.

For awhile I had the belief that putting a Bucher Split Ring on the nose of my cranks and jerks made them more erratic. However, after having my Slammer Deep Divers "unhook" themselves several times by working the splitring off the line-tie.... I reverted back to NO splitrings to connect me to my lure. For hanging hooks... they are obviously the way to go... but with my VIOLENT twitching habits... even the Joe Bucher SUPER Rings are not strong enough.

I also like the wolverines for hanging hooks as well. They are tough and won't rust or corrode. For the large hook hangers... I use Wolverines... and all others get the Bucher Super Rings. They both are outstanding products. In fact, I REALLY REALLY like the smaller size Super Rings Bucher came out with last year. Those babies are awesome on all the smaller musky lures.

When working glide baits where I used a split ring on the nose, I have had the single wire leader work around the split ring and come free from the bait. Knock on wood, I have not had a snap come open yet.

well just when you think you have it all figured out...lol, the muskies win again. JLong, another question, I should start a new topic, but there are too many now as it is.[] With your violent twitching do you get very many follows? Sometimes when cranking and a follow is seen, the best thing to do is speed up or act more erratic. With your style of fishing, does the strike then come when you slow down or use less twitching?? thx in advance.

GregM,
Yes, I still get follows. However, when I am giving myself a hernia by twitching the living bajeezus out of a lure.... the few follows I get are usually aggressive MISSED strikes at boatside. It is amazing how many fish lunge at your lure..... just as you give it another rip. It is really frustrating when you get in a rythym of ripping and you see a fish coming, yet cannot stop yourself from starting you next rip.

It is this type of observation (less lazy follows and more ferocious boatside attacks) that has led me to believe that triggering reflex, instinctive, reaction, or however want to describe them strikes are so effective. I've found a longer pause is better, and you will not miss as many strikes.

To be honest, I'm not sure if being more alert is a good thing with this style of fishing. I can't tell you how many fish I pulled lures away from last year. One fish in particular really burns me. I was ripping a suspending deep diver in a VERY clear water lake the last weekend in May. I'm in about 25 feet of water and my lure is down about 8 feet. I gave it one last long pause before a begin its upward decent.... and I see a solid 30 pounder come screaming in from the side totally committed to eating the bait. The classic "don't set until you feel the fish" rule that applies to topwater baits DEFINITELY applies to this technique as well. Despite that, I pulled the lure away from the fish and only nipped her in the corner of the mouth.... just enough to see 2 or 3 flared mouth gator shakes before she strolled away unharmed. Its times like that..... that I wish I was NOT paying attention and gawking at eagles flying overhead or something. Had I been doing that... I'm certain that fish would have t-boned my crank and had 3 trebles firmly planted in her jaw.

If you get a lazy follow with this technique.... it ain't the right time. Come back later on those fish. That's how TR scored the fish that put us in 10th place at the Fox Chain PMTT last year. I ripped her up 3 times on saturday... and we went back on her first thing sunday morning and TR stuck her.

Long story short. YES, you still get follows when incorporating my erratic style of fishing. It the nature of the beast.

appreciate the reply, the reason I asked is because of Paul Klein's statement at out Musky Inc. meeting. "If you are getting follows, you are not working your bait correctly". It seems you are working baits pretty hard for a constant flash or wounded bait fish scenario. I agree with your last line, its the nature of the beast to follow, no matter how erratic. I think I will try this next summer with maybe some extra long pauses 1/3 or 1/2 way to the boat instead of boatside to get them to eat quicker. Thx much, great stuff!!!
