| Does anyone ever have any problems with Bagley Monster Shads "blowing out"? I've just started trolling them this year and been having problems. It seems when I turn or speed up a little it causes it to roll and eventually rise up and start water skiing. I'm thinking I have to try different leaders in weight and length, I use 65lb. Power Pro. I have been trying all different lengths of line out with the same results. I can only get them to run true trolling straight at 2-4mph but the first time I try turning or any snaking movement with the motor it blows out. Any thoughts? | |||

Run it next to the boat for a little while and see if it runs right or left. That in itself can make it blow out easier when it's sped up. I don't know what the high end speed is for trolling those, so you may only be able to troll to say 3 mph with them. If you go faster you might have to use different baits. But, like I said above, I don't troll them, so I don't know what the top speed is that they will troll at. Other than that, make sure it's in tune, as that can make the bait blow out.

Posts: 172 | Kevin, Bagleys can be tough to tune. You just have to play with them. I have had much more luck with the Hooker Shads. Easier to tune and the lips don't break off. Bob

| Will do Joel, I just thought... do you think the split ring on the end of the leader allows for enough play to blow out. I also thought I was running it to close to the boat and the motor disturbance was causing it to roll but it seems to fail at all different lengths. I generally like to figure 8 my trolling baits or give them a walk around just to see if there in tune and they seemed to run OK. I know some baits like jointed baby depth raiders tend to jump and kick out once in awhile, do you think Bag's Mon. Shad is suppose to also? | |||

Posts: 172 | Kevin, Split rings don't matter. To tune it, let out 20 feet of line at the speed you are trolling. If the bait is blowing out to the right, bend the eye to the left. As I said before, they are tough to tune and you will need to keep doing this until it runs straight. I have trolled Bagleys to 6 mph, but the must be tuned.

| Thanks backlash, I'll give it a shot. I know I wasn't nowhere near 6mph so they should work. | |||

Posts: 381 | The Monster shad will spin out around 4-5 MPH. I would go woth the Hooker shads. I have had the biggest fish of my life on the orange carp pattern! They tune up great. I also change the hooks and split rings out. Hooker just came out with the "Seducer". I have yet to try them but I got a good feeling about them! Also the tuff shad are great baits. Chris makes quality baits for a good price. He is just coming out with a plastic vesion, They had been made from wood. Edited by nxtcast 6/2/2006 6:19 PM

Posts: 20270 Location: oswego, il | I like the bagleys alot. I have trolled mine to 6mph, never tried trolling faster than that. Here is an easier way to tune the bait. Put out about 4ft of line next to the boat while you are running along and rip the bait forward. Bend the eye of the biat towards the direction you want it to go. Doing it this way will get that bait tuned very well. I agree on the tuff shads, I love them and they troll well. The hookers do too but don't seem to have the vibration the bagley's do. Some lakes I do well on them some Idon't compared with the bagleys. The hookers do troll well.

Posts: 2361 | I vote with the "can the monster shad" group-for trolling. Too many baits out there that do run well at speed to take your time trying to get these buggers so they will run fast imo. Don't mind casting them, but then I get into the same, "too many baits that work better" deal. I love a lot of different bagley baits, particularly db3's, but the monster shad is just one design that I never felt "worked" for trolling. but that is just my opinion.

| Good one Kevin! Read and loved your story about the tourney with Tuffdaddy, congrats! If your ever planning on fishing the Mad Chain or if you would like to take a drive out this way I'd be glad to take you out. I've been keeping Joels' old boat slimed up just like he'd want me to do. | |||
